DESIGN DETAILS
After brainstorming, researching, and contacting Ford,
the 2017-2018 team was able to begin implementing
the gasoline, turbocharged, direct injection (GTDI) Ford
1.0L EcoBoost engine into the chassis. The research
highlighted all the engine's advantageous features
including variable cam timing, turbo charging, direct
injection, a variable displacement oil pump, and driveby-wire.
The UW-Platteville CSC Team chose the Arctic Cat
ProCross chassis as the base for the competition.
Selecting a chassis that would accommodate the
additional weight and size was important. The stiffness of
the ProCross chassis and its large engine compartment
was a crucial deciding factor.
A custom Camso track replaced the stock track. The
track's design utilizes quiet ramp technology to prevent
harsh contact between the bogie wheels and the track.
Instead of studding the track, in-lug studs were chosen.
This reduces weight and is quieter than traditional
studs. The ports in the track reduce noise, lessen the
total rotating mass, and increase the track's flexibility to
improve driveline efficiency.
To maximize the performance of our driveline, the
team utilized a C3 belt drive system. This system
increased efficiency, alleviated friction, and reduced
mass. The total weight savings of the belt drive system
was 8 lb less than the traditional chain drive.

MOMENTUM

Graphite slides were used instead of the standard polymer hyfax
slides. These were chosen due to their lower coefficient of friction, lower
operating temperatures, and increased durability. They also provide
higher drivetrain performance and efficiency. By using a big wheel kit in
the rear and replacing the standard bogie wheels, the torque required is
reduced by minimizing the angular acceleration of the track.
A custom-designed and -fabricated fuel tank was used again this year
(2018-2019). Location, fuel capacity, airbox, battery storage, and weight
were all factors in the design of the tank. With the motor repositioned
and the stock over-structure being used in this design, much of the
area previously used for the fuel tank was no longer an option. The
tank was built to hold approximately 8 gal of fuel, based on estimated
fuel consumption over 100 miles, and 11-gauge aluminum was used to
reduce weight.
The OEM Ford three-way catalytic converter was implemented into
the exhaust to combat harmful exhaust gases. The catalytic converter
is considered a three-way catalyst because of the wash-coat that is
applied to the honeycomb substrate within the converter. This washcoat converts NOx, hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxides into N2, H2O,
and CO2, respectively.
Emissions are measured through the use of an e-score. The e-score
is a number generated based on the number of unwanted compounds
that exit the exhaust system. The compounds measured consist of
hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides. A score of 175 is
needed in order to pass the emissions portion of the Clean Snowmobile
competition. Also needed to pass emissions is a score of 90 g/kW-hr of
HC-NOx or less, as well as less than 15 g/kW-hr of CO. This year, we were
one of two teams to pass emissions.
Kendall Bentley, a senior pursuing a bachelor's degree in mechanical
engineering at the University of Wisconsin - Platteville, wrote this article
for MOMENTUM. This year is her fourth on the university's SAE Clean
Snowmobile Challenge team, for which she is serving her second term as
secretary/treasurer. She is also on the UW-Platteville SAE Executive Board
serving as Diversity Coordinator for the third year in a row.
