AutoDrive Challenge team gets the
most out of its few sensors.
THE NORTH CAROLINA A&T STATE UNIVERSITY AutoDrive Challenge
team bounced back from a sixth-place finish in the first year of the
three-year competition to finish first nationally and second overall in the
second year, 2019. Who knows where they might finish in the third and
final year, 2020.
Few can answer that question with more knowledge than Sai Charan
Dekkata, Tesfamichael Getahun, and Karreem Hogan, the student leads,
and Dr. Karimoddini, the lead faculty advisor for the team that goes by
the name "Aggie Autonomous Auto."
MOMENTUM caught up with them recently via email to recall the
team's 2019 successes and provide some insight about what the team is
focusing on for this year's competition.
What did the judges seem to be most impressed by during the team's
presentation at Mcity?
The judges for the AutoDrive Challenge were impressed by the
team's effective sensor selection and placement strategy, where the
team selected a minimum number of sensors (lowest possible cost),

while getting maximum performance. In Year 2 of the
AutoDrive Challenge, the team opted for a wider range
of sensors to combat the higher complexity of the
second year's challenges, which included identifying and
responding to traffic signals, traffic signs, lane keeping,
lane changing, obstacle avoidance and passing through
a tunnel. To successfully pass the challenges, our Aggie
Autonomous Auto (A3) team selected the proper
sensors, determined the best sensor mounting positions,
designed sensor mounting structures, identified the
required software modules, and took optimal safety
strategies, resulting in a successful performance and
placing the A3 team in second overall rank.
The judges were also impressed by the presentation
of the vehicle, the wrap on the car, and the blue
autonomous light around the vehicle, which made it the
best-looking car out of the eight cars in the competition.
The judges for the SAE International AutoDrive
Challenge were also impressed by the creative ideas our
team put together to reduce the overall vehicle price
and increase the performance. Some of them include:
* Using the sensors that are already available in the car
such as the encoder reduced the extra parts, reduced
the overall cost, and provided better usage of the server.
* A robust image processing algorithm for lane detection
and tracking was developed and implemented, which
