Additional validation, such as 3D-scanning the chassis
to have some metrics on our new fabrication technique
and be able to improve it for next year, also impressed
the judges. Finally, I think they had a good impression
of us as a team whose members know how to work
together and make the best out of their knowledge
and know-how.
Our success this season really was built over many
years. We were always quite conservative with the
changes we do on the car every year to make sure we
get every bit right. Therefore, we must give credits to all
the members who worked on the project for the past 5
years! They built the foundations for the knowledge, the
standards, the principles, and some designs that we still
use today. They have as big of a part in our success as
the actual team members do.
I think a long-term vision is very important in Formula
SAE. We have had some criticism in the past about the
changes made on the car being too conservative-not
taking big enough leaps. Now, I am pretty convinced
taking baby steps, but making sure they all pay off, is a
good way to go, especially for smaller teams or ones that
are not excessively well funded.
ALL ABOUT THE PEOPLE
We have the incredible chance to have such an awesome
community in Formula SAE. In Montreal, and even in
Canada, this community really is stronger than ever.
The great camaraderie between the teams in Montreal
is amazing. Having the chance to test and share some
experience and thoughts with top teams like ETS and
McGill, who also won competitions this year, is very
motivating. The relationships we have had with so many
other teams' members--Cegep du Vieux Montréal,

Carleton University, Ontario Tech University, and the University of Texas Arlington, just to mention a few-were awesome too!
In the end, winning is a great acknowledgement for the sacrifices
made throughout the year by everyone, but the real thrill really comes
from the passion we share together with everyone that gets involved in
Formula SAE. I am so grateful to have been able to work for such a great
team and to have reached our goals. Now, it's all eyes on 2020, and even
2021, as we are preparing the ground for some new challenges to come...

Renaud Pepin, a senior who expects to graduate in 2020 from
Polytechnique Montreal with a bachelor's degree in mechanical
engineering, wrote this article for MOMENTUM. He served as team captain
for the Poly Montreal Formula SAE team for the last two years and is
serving as technical lead this year.
