STUDENT
GENERATION

The team built a custom dynamometer for more accurate CVT
testing.

Negotiating the Maneuverability Event course at Baja SAE California.
2019 was our approach to the design process. In our presentations, we
emphasized heavily how we approached the design of the 2019 car
by setting design goals and requirements to define exactly what each
design change would achieve, and we did our best throughout the
year to verify that we were in fact achieving the goals and meeting the
requirements we had set. While there is always more that can be tested
to validate a design and complete the design cycle, 2019 was a big step
forward for us.

"...as a whole we are significantly more
organized than the team has ever been."

What one or two other parts or systems was the team most proud of,
and why?
In the brakes system, we were quite proud of our adjustable brake
pedal and overall master cylinder packaging. The whole master cylinder
assembly decreased in size and weight significantly from 2018 to 2019,
which enabled the implementation of an adjustable brake pedal.
We also designed and fabricated custom axle half-shafts for the first
time in 2019. Defining the spline profile necessary to interface with our
CV joints and figuring out how to machine the splines in-house took
some incredibly creative thinking. While we did still run into some small
issues at competition with our axles, we learned a huge amount through
the whole process.

What was the main engineering lesson the team learned in the
2018-2019 season, and how is that lesson being applied to the
2019-2020 season?
The biggest lesson we learned in 2018-2019 was the importance of

good management, communication, and having many
contingency plans. As I alluded to before, our build
season went very poorly in that we were immensely
behind schedule almost from the very start. We were
too lenient in design freeze dates, and as a result didn't
have any wiggle room in our schedule for things to go
wrong (which they always do). By the end of build, we
were just prioritizing getting the car finished. We cut a
lot of corners as a result, which is reflected in the quality
of what we produced.
We took the summer to regroup and reorganize, and
we planned the 2020 season in far more detail than the
team ever has. We built extra space into our timeline
and made sure to have a back-up plan for anything
that could potentially go wrong. We increased the
frequency of full-team status update meetings to
improve communication and enforced design review
and design freeze dates far more than we ever have in
the past. We improved our documentation system, and
as a whole we are significantly more organized than
the team has ever been.
What is the biggest engineering change the team is
incorporating into the 2020 car?
The biggest change we're working on for the 2020 car
is in the mechanism of our custom CVT. If all goes well,
we should be able to cut a significant amount of weight
out of the assembly and improve efficiency via reducing
rotational inertia of the system.
