STICKING

TO THE SCHEDULE
By strictly meeting deadlines, West Virginia University Institute of Technology
team hopes to reach new heights in SAE Aero Design.
AS WE ANXIOUSLY AWAITED the release of the 2020 SAE Aero Design
rules this past September, the Golden Wings SAE Aero Design team
at West Virginia University Institute of Technology was eager to apply
what was learned in the 2018-2019 competition season and improve our
results by taking to the skies in 2020.
When SAE released the rules for the 2019-2020 season, there were
many new changes for the Regular Class, among them:
* carrying soccer balls instead of tennis balls
* a maximum wingspan constraint of 120 inches
* a takeoff distance of only 100 feet
With the famous 1000-watt power limiter still in place, I knew with
my four years as team captain that finding the perfect combination of
limiting drag while maximizing propulsion would be key to a successful
spring 2020 competition this year at SAE Aero Design East in Lakeland,
Fla. (the 2020 competition took place too late for the results to be
included in this issue of MOMENTUM).

Like most teams, we spent a couple of weeks recruiting
new members. From pizza parties, good word of mouth,
and social media, we grew from 15 to 25 members. We
were ready to get to work.
The team was divided into four sub-teams for design:
propulsion, wing dynamics, fuselage, and landing gear
systems. Given the increased level of difficulty, the critical
systems of wing dynamics, propulsion, and fuselage
were assigned to senior capstone teams. Assigned to
the landing gear and fabrication teams were more junior
members. Each sub-team would meet at their own
discretion, and their leaders, along with faculty advisors,
would meet once a week to communicate design ideas
and make decisions relating to the new design.
The first step the team took was to review the new
rules and analyze the flight-scoring equation to highlight
where the team's primary focus should be. By mapping
the equation variables, we determined how much cargo
and balls to carry. From the lessons learned in prior
competitions, we knew that we should pay special
attention to problem areas that we always struggled
with: center of gravity, tail design, landing gear rigidity,
detailed CAD models, and testing.
Using this initial information, we developed a budget
and schedule to help the team keep on track throughout
all phases of this project. "In the past, we have struggled
to keep to a strict schedule, and it leaves us with parts
of the project being rushed and incomplete, resulting in
us losing points in all three phases of competition," said
team member Jacob Marshall, a senior.
