MYERS AWARD WINNERS NAMED
GIVEN ANNUALLY for the best technical
paper(s) presented by a student,
SAE International's Myers Award for
Outstanding Student Paper is a real feather
in the cap. So congratulations are in order
for Mehar Bade of West Virginia University
and Qianyu Ouyang of the University of
Pennsylvania, 2019 award winners.
As is required under the Myers Award,
each winner must give a presentation at
"a major SAE meeting." Bade and Ouyang
gave their separate papers at last fall's
Innovations in Mobility (IIM) conference.
At that conference, they also were
honored as winners of a new contest,
the first annual SAE Student and Young
Professional Technical Paper Competition.
Unlike at some SAE conferences, it was
decided that, at IIM, the students would
present their papers in a regular technical

session, rather than a special session
designed for student papers only-
the idea being that it would be more
beneficial to the students in terms of
learning experience to have them present
their papers shoulder to shoulder with
seasoned engineers.
In addition to enjoying the prestige of
having won an SAE award and presented
a paper in front of their more seasoned
industry engineers, the students received
an all-expenses-paid trip to the IIM
conference in Novi, Mich.
Call them go-getters or up-and-comers.
Either way, Bade and Ouyang will forever
be known as SAE Winners.
Established in 1997, the Myers Award
for Outstanding Student Paper recognizes
the late Dr. Phil Myers and his wife, Jean,
for their lifelong devotion to students and

A doctoral student at West Virginia University,
Mehar Bade mainly focuses on the development
and optimization of Free Piston Engine
Generators as CHP systems at the residential
level and also as range extenders for hybrid
electric vehicles. The title of his winning paper
is "Feasibility of Multiple Piston Motion Control
Approaches in a Free Piston Engine Generator."
SAE. Myers was a renowned expert on
internal combustion engines.
