DOSSIER: JUSTIN LANGE OF
"HARD WORK," "POSITIVITY," AND "INCLUSIVITY."
Those are ingredients for career success, and they are
words Justin Lange lives by. He honed those qualities as
a member of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Baja
SAE team and parlayed them into a job at John Deere.
As a product design engineer there, he is responsible
for designing the intake, exhaust, fuel, cooling, and
HVAC systems on the company's next generation of
crossover utility vehicles.
He graduated with a bachelor's degree in mechanical
engineering from UW-Madison in December 2018. Read
on to learn more about Lange.
Why did you decide to become an engineer?
I consider myself lucky because, for me, choosing
to pursue a career in engineering was never really a
decision. I just knew that's what I was destined to do. I
have always been intrigued by mechanical systems. Since
I can remember, I spent my time in the garage helping
my dad on various carpentry, car, and ATV projects.
To what character traits do you attribute your success
The number one thing that I would attribute my past
achievements to is definitely hard work. Even if there are
people or teams with greater natural ability/opportunity,
Justin going "full send" and turning heads during the endurance event at Baja SAE
Kansas 2016. The team took second place in their iconic wood-panel and white-walltire car.
I have found putting in the extra time on every nitty gritty detail is the
greatest equalizer. If you have to tell someone how hard you are working
on something, you aren't doing enough. They should know strictly from
The second thing I would note is positivity and inclusivity. It sounds
cliché, but everyone deserves your respect. Not only is it essential for
your individual success or your team's collective success, but it will make
for a much more enjoyable journey along the way. Which in the end is
what it is all about, enjoying what you do.

What is the most interesting project that you are working on at
I recently purchased a wrecked sport side-by-side sight unseen on
auction. I have always had a passion for off-roading; I started on
four-wheelers when I was in elementary school, joined Baja SAE in
college, and found a great job working on utility vehicles for Deere.
This side-by-side was the perfect evolution.
So far so good for the project. The engine and drivetrain are
unscathed, other than a blown belt and clutch cover. There is also
minimal suspension damage, but I will need a lot of new plastic styling
parts and a new roll cage, which, as any Baja welder would, I am
planning to make it myself. I am hopeful to have a solid trail machine by
spring and maybe someday rebuild it for cross-country racing.
