THE 2019 COMPETITION YEAR introduced a new problem to the
University of Saskatchewan Aero Design Team: for the first time since
the team's re-inception in 2014, we were without any of the original
members. We were left with a young, inexperienced set of juniors to
lead the team, with a lot of passion but somewhat bereft of knowledge.

This article is being published as the winning entry in a
MOMENTUM article contest announced last fall. For her
winning effort, Kaitlyn Baron, the author, will receive a
$500 check from SAE International.

It would have been a rough year had we accepted that
as our fate. Instead, we took what we did know and
forged our own path. Without the instincts gained from
experience, we knew that one of the keys to a successful
aircraft would be prototypes and flight testing.

PROTOTYPE FLYING
Our first prototype was not originally meant to fly. A
small fuselage was created to test new manufacturing
techniques, and we asked, "Why stop there?" We
built a tail (and then rebuilt it bigger), strapped on a

Design Team.
If you write an article and are published in this
magazine, you are already earning 25 cents per word.
Articles must be between 800 and 1,500 words, with
a headline and sub-headline; at least three photos
relevant to the article; and a headshot. Your article
will then also have the chance to win "Best Article of
the Year" and be awarded an additional cash prize,
to total your earnings to $1,000 USD. Deadline is
September 15, 2020. Questions and entries can be

Even though times are uncertain right now, SAE is
still offering Industrial Lectures to student members
with SAE Chapters. Our lecturers are available to
you virtually, whether you want to learn more about
project management, implementing virtual design,
vehicle dynamic testing, and many other topics. Visit
