FORMULA SAE PIVOT PUTS
FOCUS ON ADAPTABILITY
MRacing from the University of Michigan was one of only
4 double-winners out of the 142 teams competing in
Formula SAE Virtual 2020.
The University of Michigan's Formula SAE team proved particularly adept at
adapting to the competition's special format for 2020.
THE CORONAVIRUS KNOCKED OUT the Formula SAE
on-site dynamic testing events in 2020, but it failed to
kill the competitive spirit of the 142 teams that took
part in a virtual version of the competition consisting
only of static contests. And students weren't the only
ones affected.
"No one was unaffected by this situation," said
Kaley Zundel, Education Program Manager for SAE
International's Collegiate Design Series, of which Formula
SAE is the largest program/competition. "Mandatory
work-from-home requirements were put in place for
most of industry. Some volunteers and staff started
their second job playing schoolteacher to their young
children now at home. Our FSAE student team members
transitioned with their own challenges of virtual learning
and being locked out of their machine shops."
But the pivot to a virtual environment proved
successful. New digital platforms were identified and
used. Volunteers were recruited. Static schedules were
produced. Judging of cost, design, and presentation
events were planned out.

Unlike in a regular FSAE competition in which each team competes
against all the others in 10 different "Events," such as Design Report,
a different structure was put in place for this year's competitions.
Specifically, only three Events, all virtual, were held: Cost Event,
Presentation Event, and Design Event. Also, teams were grouped in
"queues" of about a dozen each, with judges for each queue selecting
a winner for each Event. There were 30 queues in all, with four teams
winning two events and the remainder winning one.
"A student team was recognized out of every queue for awarding
monies by sponsors and SAE," Zundel said. "But most importantly,
student team members and industry professionals were able to
participate in the judged events and discuss immediate feedback.
Through the static judging and sponsored skill-shops offered in the
virtual events, the educational benefit of Formula SAE was attainable by
those who participated."
Instead of holding each of the planned FSAE competitions virtually,
all teams registered for the individual competitions competed in a single
virtual one, held June 19.
Among the double-winners at Formula SAE Virtual 2020 was MRacing
from the University of Michigan, which captured first place in its queues
in the Presentation Event and the Design Event. Clemson University and
