Universidade Estadual de Campinas duplicated the feat.
OLIDWORKS Educational Product. For Instructional Use Only.
The other double-winner, the University of Calgary, found
victories in the Cost Event and Presentation Event.
Dynamic events account for the most points in a
regular FSAE competition, but MRacing's thorough
design work paid off big time in the virtual 2020
competition.
About his team's success, 2020-2021 MRacing team
captain Jared Dirksen told MOMENTUM: "This was very
satisfying for our team, as we completely remodeled
our approach to the Design Event this year. We worked
really hard to justify every design decision we made
based on how many points it would bring us in the
dynamic events, and we made models to predict our
performance in each event."
The Formula SAE Virtual judges were most impressed
with MRacing's powertrain and aerodynamics systems,
noted Dirksen, who served as turbo and fueling lead for
the 2019-2020 team: "On the powertrain side, the judges
thought we had the best turbocharger development they
had seen and were very impressed with the validation
we did of the system on our dynamometer. On the
aerodynamics side, the judges called our presentation
'Design Finals level' and were impressed with how we
used and recorded our CFD simulations. Along with these
systems, our team was very proud of the monocoque
system. This year we not only improved on the design
of the monocoque, but also manufactured it in a timely
manner that allowed us to complete the first drive of the
car on March first."
Like MRacing, the team from the University of
Washington won its Design Event queue. Whereas
MRacing competed in the IC (internal combustion) Class,
Washington competed in the Electric Class.
"One part that we are always proud of and consistently
impresses judges is the design and manufacture of our
full carbon-fiber monocoque," said Rachel Leu, who

served as lead of Washington's business team and was a member of
the eTrain team for the 2019-2020 season. "This year, this part weighs
50 pounds more than past years' due to compliance with the German
Formula Student rules. The design process took about six months, which
included extensive testing of panels to implement local specialized
laminates for minimal weight. And, as always, many iterations and
meetings were needed in order to make sure our geometry was
designed around ergonomics, suspension, eTrain, drivetrain, and
aerodynamic requirements."
Additional steps added several months to realize a completed
monocoque.
As best as Kyle Bonin, chief engineer of the Clemson University
FSAE team, could tell, "the judges weren't most impressed by
a single system of the car; instead, they were impressed by our
implementation of a vehicle trade-space study, which focused on
the overall performance of the vehicle by identifying and analyzing
key vehicle subsystem interactions rather than maximizing the
performance of each system individually. Areas of focus included a
cooling interaction between aerodynamics and powertrain, a vehicle
architecture interaction between chassis and suspension, and the
interaction between aerodynamic and suspension performance. A
lap simulation script created in Matlab was used to compare design
concepts, and optimization was done through the use of ModeFrontier
to maximize the predicted points scored at competition. This process
guided the design philosophy of the entire team for the year, and it is
this philosophy that the judges were most impressed by."
As the University of Waterloo Formula Motorsports team's project
manager for 2019-2020, Danny Stratkov was key in the squad's winning
a Design Event, Internal Combustion Class. "The judges seemed most
impressed by the understanding our chassis and suspension teams
gained in designing our roll-heave decoupled suspension this year," he
told MOMENTUM. "Going from corner springs to roll-heave decoupled
presented a number of challenges to these systems, which required
strong, first-principles, justified design choices. We are certainly very
proud of the systems we have designed and look forward to testing
them on the track as soon as we can."
