CAreer Path

VASQUEZ stormed out of undergraduate studies
in December 2018 and became a full-time
software consultant right away, with Pariveda
Solutions. Later, he began working with a socialmedia-platform startup, Nuvenu, which is still in
its early stages.
More opportunities lie ahead, as Vasquez sees
it, so he is now working toward a master's of
business administration degree at the University
of Texas-Dallas, with a focus in IT project
management. He'd earned his bachelor's degree
in computer engineering from Texas A&M.
Read on to learn more about Vasquez.
Why did you decide to become an engineer?
Computer technology has piqued my interest
ever since I can remember. Throughout my
educational career, I found myself disassembling
products from around the house to understand
how their internal components seamlessly
worked together. From the family's PlayStation,
to my parent's old cell phones, I spent countless
hours exploring my interest in electronics. I
quickly realized that I was absolutely fascinated
with the capability of computer technology, and
it was clear that I wanted to pursue studies within
this area. Initially, the decision between hardware

and software was clearly hardware; however, I quickly fell in love with
software after my first semester in college.
To what character traits do you attribute your success to date?
The beauty of software engineering is there are ample opportunities to learn
new skills and apply learned skills in different ways. My experience as a fulltime software consultant has taught me one way to implement a multimillion-dollar business idea and build it from the ground up. The execution of
the project was by far imperfect, but rather a perfect learning opportunity
for a recent college graduate. By being present and taking every opportunity
to learn from my colleagues, I have been able to reinforce my career growth
with invaluable experience by contributing to the forefront of development.
Perseverance has to be the key to my career growth thus far, as it provides a
foundation for continuous learning. By taking proper initiative when new or
difficult tasks arise, this skill has allowed me to overcome challenges that
translated into newly acquired skills
Who most influenced you on your journey to becoming a professional
That would be a professor who taught one of my junior-level computer
science courses. This professor of practice has a remarkable 20-year career
at Intel, ultimately achieving a senior director role. His genuine and influential
personality has motivated me to dedicate my career to software engineering
and to continuously teach others along the way. The valuable lessons he
taught still apply to my current-day work, such as building/maintaining
professional relationships and collaborating as an engineering team. I have
been exceptionally fortunate to have built a relationship with him and was
