to develop online presentations and discussions to teach our
members about important engineering tools such as MATLAB
and ANSYS. While it would have been easy to drop everything
Supermileage-related, it was our primary goal to keep our
members engaged, interested, and ready to get back to
building once we can safely return to campus.
What was the biggest key to the team's success?
We made a large effort at the beginning of the fall 2019
semester to recruit a lot of students. We went from a team of 5
members to 25! This was critical to our team's success, as we
are always focused on ensuring that the legacy of the team
continues through the next generation of students. Building a
team with a passion for engineering and a drive to learn
enabled us to teach our new members a lot of material quickly,
and get right into researching, designing, and building our cars.
Furthermore, although we put a great deal of effort into the
immediate projects in front of us, we are always focused on
ensuring that NIU Supermileage will last long after my
presidency, and even the team captain after that.
Of what part or system of your car were you most proud?
Our vehicles have always been very reliable and quite
successful in terms of mileage, but we knew that we had to
take our gasoline car to the next level. We recognized that the
most impactful project we could develop, fabricate, and test in
a year was a complete overhaul of the engine. This led us to
design and build a custom dual overhead cam engine head. We
worked on this project over 9 long months to ensure that it was
safe, reliable, and simple to maintain. A considerable amount of
design and analysis was performed, as there are multiple
possible failure modes. Structural FEA allowed us to verify that
the rocker arms would not fail due to fatigue or yielding, and
by using free body diagrams and CAD we were able to

determine the maximum allowable rocker inertia to ensure that
the rocker bearing would maintain constant contact with the
camshaft. While we were not able to test the engine head due
to COVID-19, we finished fabricating and assembling it. The
final product is primarily composed of in-house machined
components, but we used a scooter head as the base in order
to save time on designing the complicated geometries of the
intake and exhaust ports. This allowed for us to focus all of our
efforts on designing the optimal cam lobes, camshafts, rockers,
mounts, and nearly every other head component. Ultimately,
we wanted the ability to finely adjust the cam timing, relative
timing, and implement swappable cams, which are all things
we successfully designed into our engine head. When we are
finally able to test the engine head, we expect to see a
substantial increase in power and efficiency, especially since
the head will allow for the engine to operate in our ideal RPM
range. n
