SAE 101: STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
AS WONDERFUL AN OPPORTUNITY the
SAE Collegiate Design Series (CDS) is
for college students, it's just one avenue
student can take on the road to deeper
engagement with the larger SAE
International organization. Other
opportunities await those wise enough
to look for them.
MOMENTUM is here to help you find
them.
In fact, MOMENTUM itself is a great
opportunity for students to get
engaged-not just by reading the
magazine to find out what other SAE
Student Members and college students
are doing project-wise, but also by
writing about your own experience on a
CDS team or on some school-related
project. In this way, you can put yourself
on the map, so to speak. And the
rewards go far beyond the 25 cents per
published word authors receive; having
authored an article for an SAE
publication could get you noticed by
hiring managers. Those interested in
submitting an article should pitch their
idea to momentum@sae.org.
Many of the articles published by
MOMENTUM are written by a members
of CDS teams. And what reader of this
magazine doesn't know how important
an engagement opportunity CDS is,
opening doors as it does to a successful
career? But what CDS participants
might not fully appreciate as they
design, build, and test their vehicles
before putting them up against other
teams' vehicles is that CDS represents
perhaps their first future volunteer
engagement with SAE. More than a few
CDS participants have gone on to serve
as judges at the competitions, and all
current students are encouraged to do
so.
Serving as a judge could open doors
to other volunteer opportunities for
students soon after graduation.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves.
There are several ways for students to
become, or stay, engaged with their
globally revered professional society,
increasing the organization's value in
doing so. Aside from MOMENTUM and

The SAE Collegiate Design Series is just one way in which students can get involved with SAE-and
with each other.
CDS, students can, for example, get
involved in the Society's governance by
becoming an SAE Chapter officer-or at
the very least, attending chapter
meetings.
A more modern form of engagement
for students is a dedicated discussion
forum on SAE's Member Connection
online community. Recently formed, the
Student Community serves as a forum
to not only keep up to date on SAE
student programs and benefits, but also
to engage with other students around
the world.
"The Student Community also is a
great place to ask questions about a
class project, get feedback from other
teams participating in a CDS
competition, or talk about your
professional career aspirations," said
Donna Edenhart, SAE Director of
Membership. "At the end of the day, we
want to make sure that this community
is a place where amazing SAE Students
like you can talk about your shared
passion for the mobility industry and
gain valuable insights from each other."
Volunteering is another opportunity
for engagement inside the SAE global
community. Opportunities can be found

here. One of them involves formation of
a team of "Member Connection
Ambassadors" to post comments on a
bi-weekly basis on Member Connection.
Discussion topics will be provided by
SAE. Each week there will be a different
leader responsible for starting the
discussion. The rest of the team will be
responsible for responding to the
discussion post. The goal will be to tag
other fellow Student Members so they
can take part in the conversation and
bring awareness to the benefits of
Member Connection.
For students, volunteering is rightly a
secondary concern. But as they grow
into their profession, "giving back"
should emerge as a growing priority. A

Scholarships are another way for
students to connect with, and take
advantage of, one of SAE's goals: To
help individuals succeed as studentengineers, and then as professional
