Avion Cargo Polytechnique Montreal's experience with dedicating an entire team to new
members reveals crucial lessons about apprenticeship and the lifestyle of engineering.
SOME YEARS BACK, THE POLYTECHNIQUE MONTREAL SAE
Aero Design team, Avion Cargo, was running into the age-old
problem of how to effectively train the incoming cohorts of
students. Like many of the technical challenges that the team
came across, it was all about making compromises on how
much time and effort members were willing to invest.
Conversely to the usual obstacles the team overcame, the right
answer did not spring off a decision matrix.
At Polytechnique Montréal, we have over 20 student
associations that participate in engineering competitions,
making talent recruiting a highly competitive process, and
retaining recruits even more important. Not to mention, there
was a significant number of new students, myself included,
who waltzed into their first meeting without the slightest idea
of what goes into a complex engineering project like this. For
the sake of the continuation of Avion Cargo, the team needed
to find a way to properly train new recruits that would not
derail the already tight schedule of preparing for the annual
SAE Aero Design competition.
MOMENTUM
Being a team of creative thinkers, Avion Cargo found a
solution, and put it to the test in fall of 2016. Up until then,
Polytechnique Montréal competed uniquely in the SAE Aero
Design Regular Class. That September, the team introduced a
new team competing in the Micro Class, tailored for and
dedicated to new students who wanted to test the muddy
waters of aeronautical engineering. To create a welcoming
environment, an experienced student acted as a dedicated
mentor, and all the Regular Class team members were at the
disposal of the Micro Class team members to ask questions.
Halfway through the year, the team votes their captain among
themselves to develop autonomy from the Regular Class team.
Expert members of each department held workshops every
other week for the first few months of the fall semester to
provide the recruits with the necessary knowledge to get
started.
The concept was simple: guide the new students through a
smaller project, allowing them to taste-test every discipline of
the project, and once they finish, they will have plenty of
