CAREER PATH
strength, as it helps me ensure accountability from my peers and quality for
the projects I work on. I always feel anxious I'm not doing enough, or that I'm
letting my team down, or that my peers don't take me seriously, and it's a
constant struggle to balance doing enough to combat those fears with
giving myself space to take care of my mental health.
Of what accomplishment are you most proud?
I don't have that many big accomplishments to be proud of yet, I'm still
trying to get real results and publish my research before I finish my
undergraduate degree. Getting into Northwestern is still my number-one at
the moment. Second is probably when I finally figured out how to
programmatically extract the surfaces of 500 seal whiskers from the
collection of CT scans I collected as part of my research.
What is the most interesting project that you are working on at the
moment?
Did you know the elliptical, undulating shape of harbor seal whiskers cancels
out vortex induced vibrations and allows the animal to sense the size and
shape of a wake-generating body that passed by up to 30 seconds before?
Well, nobody has comprehensively quantified that geometry, and I'm
changing that by analyzing a huge collection of both 2D and 3D scans.

Taking a nap at the Michigan FSAE Competition in 2019 in
between events.

Who most influenced you on your journey to becoming an engineer?
I'm lucky to have supportive parents who would be proud of me if I wanted
to go to clown college and paint faces for a living. They made sure I had just
as much access to STEM programs as my older brother did, and when they
saw I had an interest in engineering they were more than happy to oblige in
books and tools for me to learn. Since nobody in my immediate family is an
engineer, my closest engineering relative is my uncle Jim, who has an
electrical engineering PhD from Northwestern and is about the smartest
person I've ever met. His job seemed really interesting, he always
encouraged me to pursue science, and I figured if I studied engineering at
Northwestern I could usurp Jim as the smartest person I've ever met.

everything I know about the hands-on side of
engineering. I owe my confidence around the
machine shop and in my knowledge about
advanced fluid dynamics concepts to my time on
the team. Going to the Formula SAE Michigan
competition in my freshman year gave me great
insight about how to give technical presentations.
I'm looking forward to learning new skills as I
settle into Baja SAE, but it's still in the SAE family
and I'm sure the competitions will offer new and
interesting challenges so I can continue to grow
as an engineer.

In what ways have you been involved with SAE International?
I joined Formula SAE my freshman fall, and from it I've learned just about

One of many days "goofing around in the shop," this time filming an educational video
about rat and seal whiskers. Featuring toy gummy rat.

What do you like to do for fun?
Build things in the shop, skateboard, ride my bike,
bother my roommates, window shop online for
cheap used cars I have no reason to buy, but man
do I want a janky pink $2000 truck.
Any other thoughts?
I'm a tree hugger! My opinion that nobody asked
for is that Formula SAE should move to entirely
electric, since it's probable that by 2040 electric
car sales (and therefore jobs) will overtake
internal-combustion car sales, and students
should have the opportunity to learn the skills
necessary to fill those roles while they're still in
college. Forcing a change would make it easier
for smaller schools like Northwestern to actually
support the transition, since we just don't have
enough people for two racecar teams, but so far
the transition to electric has been deadlocked by
the "car go vroom" crowd. Plus, even scrappy
organizations like the "24 hours of Lemons" are
moving to electric, so why can't we? n
