SAE International's China Office has become the first foreign
enterprise member of the Shanghai Federation of Economic
Organization (SFEO), which includes 184 Shanghai industrial
associations and 170 member enterprises.
Chen Zhenhao, Vice President of Shanghai Federation of
Economic Organization (SFEO) met with gary Schkade, general
Manager of Sae international china office on February 19th.
During the meeting, the two discussed further cooperation and
exchanges for better interaction with the automotive, aerospace
and transportation industries in Shanghai. The SFEO hopes to
help the SAE International China Office establish communication
channels to Shanghai Municipal Government.

"SAE International welcome's this tremendous opportunity to
join SFEO," Schkade said. "We look forward to working with local
enterprises and helping them to be more successful in terms of
standards, technical conferences and training, technology and
business exchange."
SFEO was established in March 1993 to improve the service
functions, develop the active effect of supporting Shanghai's
service-economy-oriented industrial structure adjustment, and
promote the further development of primary, secondary and
tertiary industries (including automotive and aerospace) under
the supervision of SHEITC, Shanghai Municipal Government.

SubStaNce declaratioN StaNdard to be reviSed
The Sae e-1 environmental committee will be revising
"AS9535: Substance Declaration Standard." Originally
published in 2008, this standard, one of three documents in
the declarable substances standards family, provides for a
consistent approach to collection of chemicals throughout the
supply chain. The document also provides instructions for
filling out the related substance declaration form as well as a
representation of some parts of the form.
The committee's three declarable substances standards are
designed to assist industry in making product and process
decisions to support regulatory compliance as well as mitigate
business risks such as supply chain disruption.

The revision of AS9535 will be in coordination with the
International Aerospace Environmental Group (IAEG).
The E-1 committee addresses all facets of aerospace response to
compliance with environmental requirements contained in rules,
regulations and law. Its goal is to serve as the primary technical
consultative body in determining standard and consistent
processes and tools for declaring, recording, reporting or
certifying chemical, material, or emissions content of aerospace
products to ensure consistent OEM and supplier compliance.
Those interested in participating in the work of this committee
are asked to contact Becky DeGutis at bdegutis@sae.org or
+1-724-772-4083.

The Sae aS-3 fiber optics and applied Photonics
committee, which addresses all facets of fiber optics systems
and applied photonics and serves as an industry forum to
establish definitions and standards for components and
systems approaches to fiber optic data buses, issued two
standards earlier in 2014.
AS6021, "Aerospace Fiber Optic Cable Assembly Drawing
Specification," defines the items that shall be considered when
creating a fiber optic cable assembly specification and source
control drawing intended for installation on aerospace platforms.
AS6479, "Spicer, Fusion, Fiber Optic, Aerospace," defines
fiber optic fusion splicers acceptable for the installation and
repair of fiber optic interconnects in aerospace applications.
Two different application environments are defined,
depending on whether there is risk of flammable vapor or
hazardous atmosphere being present. To address these
different application environments, two types of fusion splicer
are specified: Type I, for hazardous environments (including
potentially flammable or explosive atmospheres), and Type II,
for environments in which it is established that there is no risk
2

of flammable or explosive vapors being present.
One of the AS-3 committee's major documents is ARP5602,
"A Guideline for Aerospace Platform Fiber Optic Training
and Awareness Education." This standard and its ten
corresponding slash sheets define the minimum knowledge
and hands-on training requirements for personnel working
with fiber optic components or systems. The committee
is currently working on revisions to a number of these
documents, including those covering competencies for
fiber optics engineers, fiber optics fabricators, fiber optics
installers, and fiber optics technicians.
The four subcommittees within AS-3 are: AS-3A Fiber Optics
Applications; AS-3B Fiber Optic Supportability; AS-3C Fiber
Optic Components; and AS-3D Fiber Optic Process Definition.
These subcommittees are currently developing an extensive
range of fiber optic and photonic standards, including
documents on wavelength division multiplexing local area
networks, fiber optic cleaning,, and network end-to-end data
link evaluation systems, as well as a guide for the application
of RF photonics to aerospace platforms.
