2013, and immediately began work on developing a contractually
enforceable standard suitable for use across the defense
industrial base.
"We were striving to achieve a balance on the committee
between DoD and industry, and I think we achieved that," said
g-23 committee chair david M. Karr, of the U.S Air Force Life
Cycle Management Center. "We have about 40 members of the
committee, and it's fairly evenly split between DoD and industry.
All committee members were very dedicated and really pulled
together to create this document."

AS6500 covers design analysis, manufacturing risk identification,
planning, operations management, and supplier management.
It covers tools such as producibility analysis, key characteristics,
manufacturing readiness levels, and process FMEAs.
"I see this standard as being a great benefit to industry," Karr
said. "It provides both the tools to measure manufacturing
maturity, as well as the activities that should be conducted to
successfully mature the manufacturing process. Following
the practices in this standard will result in improved cost and
schedule performance on contracts, and ultimately, even more
robust and reliable systems for war-fighters."

Sae international's g-22 aerospace engine Supplier quality
(aeSq) committee issued its first standard, "AS13000: Problem
Solving Requirements for Suppliers," in May. This standard

costs through eliminating waste. The group aims to harmonize
current supplier quality management requirements by creating
simple, prescriptive standards requirements, establishing clear
acceptance criteria, creating a common language for quality, and
building on existing industry best practices.

The problem solving standard adopts the popular 8D (eight
disciplines problem solving) approach that is widely recognized
across industry. It can also be supported globally through existing
external training and consultancy organizations.

The committee is also continuing to work on other standards
for publication later this year. These will include a supplier selfrelease training program, inspection frequency requirements,
and measurement systems analysis. A working group focused on
process failure mode and effects analysis has also been launched.

Established in 2013, the committee's mission is to improve
the quality capability of the shared supply chain and reduce

SAE International knows that it is people who advance technology. Since 1916 it
has worked hand-in-hand with the aerospace community to find solutions to its
most common problems through such globally adopted technical documents
as Aerospace Standards (AS), Aerospace Material Specifications (AMS),
Aerospace Industry Reports (AIR), and Aerospace Recommended Practices
(ARP)-becoming the world's largest, most respected aerospace standards
development organization.
While its rich standards development history enables SAE International to
offer an array of capabilities to serve industry's growing need for future
harmonized solutions, a full suite of learning resources - including lifelong
engineering education, technical publishing, and events - work to ensure the
pipeline of future engineering talent and keep today's practitioners at the
forefront of professional growth.
