SAE AVIATION TECHNOLOGY FORUM SPOTLIGHTS AVIATION TECHNOLOGY IN CHINA

Some of the approximately 230 attendees at the SAE 2015 Aviation Technology Forum (ATF).

The current and future state of aviation technology in China
was the focus of the SAE 2015 Aviation Technology Forum
(ATF), held June 9-10 in Shanghai. Organized by SAE
International and The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China
(COMAC), the event attracted 230 experts and engineers.
The Chinese aircraft maker COMAC had a large presence at
the forum. Wu Guanghui, Vice President of COMAC, opened
the event with a presentation about the company's future
plans and roadmaps for in-house R&D, global cooperation, and

international standards. He discussed the rapid advances of the
aviation market in China and the program of nationwide civil
airport development set by the Civil Aviation Administration of
China (CAAC).
Dr. Chen Yong, General Designer of COMAC ARJ-21 (ARJ stands
for advanced regional jet), described the arduous 10-year
period for development and type certification of the twoengine aircraft, which is the first regional aircraft independently
designed by China based on international standards.
Lu Yao, Director of Aircraft Airworthiness Institution, China
Academy of Civil Aviation
Science and Technology, spoke about the current status,
systems, and future of airworthiness regulations in China. He
suggested that future development of CAAC airworthiness
regulations should eliminate the differences among regulations.
A three-hour seminar about complex system integration
featured presentations by Dr. Ying Shuxian, General Engineer
of System Integration of COMAC; Eric Peterson, SAE S-18
Standard Committee Vice President; John Hsu, AIAA Fellow;
Susan Martin, C4ADS Ergonomics and Aviation Consultant;
Henry Claeyes, Honeywell Senior Technical Researcher; and
Eran Gery, Lead Architect, IBM Continuous Engineering.
Other speakers at the forum included Yang Yang, COMAC
Market Research Center Director; David Prevor, Airbus
Helicopter Market and Prediction Head; Ms. Zhu Qin, System
Certification and Airworthiness Engineer, Aviage Systems;
Murray Scott, Australia Advanced Complex Material Structure
Director; John Liu, GE Aviation/CFM International LEAP-1C
Project Supervisor; and Wang Peng, General Manager, GE
Aviation Engineering China.

Wu Guanghui, Vice President of COMAC, delivered welcoming remarks
at the SAE 2015 Aviation Technology Forum (ATF).

This was the third time that the SAE Aviation Technology
Forum was held in China.
