NEW ELECTRIC AIRCRAFT STEERING GROUP HOLDS FIRST MEETING
The recently-formed SAE Electric Aircraft Steering Group
held its first meeting at the SAE AeroTech Congress in Seattle,
Washington, in September.
This high-level, representative group of key industry, regulatory
and research representatives will create a landscape and
gap analysis for the standardization needed to accomplish
increased electrification, and coordinate and support the various
standardization activities of SAE technical standards committees
which are working to support more electric aircraft applications
at the platform level as well as for systems and components.
The group's work will help to shape the collective industry effort
for more electric aircraft systems and applications, and look at

how SAE industry standards will facilitate global certification and
regulatory compliance.
In addition to addressing the necessary power generation and
distribution the group will address longer-term issues such as
hybrid-electric propulsion, as well as existing or nearer-term
applications or affected systems, such as electric actuation,
electric taxiing, battery management, and EWIS.
The initial September meeting was a success, with
representatives from organizations including Labinal Power
Systems, UTAS, FAA, Airbus, Rolls-Royce, GE Aviation, Boeing,
EASA, Embraer, Lufthansa Technik Astronics and the US Air
Force Research Laboratory.

AEROSPACE COUNCIL'S STEPHEN C. MERRIMAN HONORED
SAE Aerospace Council member Stephen C. Merriman, Senior
Systems Engineer, The Boeing Company, was one of eight
recipients of the 2015 James M. Crawford Technical Standards
Board Outstanding Achievement Award.
This award recognizes individuals for outstanding service in
the technical committee activities of the society, leadership

in the activities of an SAE International technical committee,
significant contributions as a representative of the Society to the
accomplishments of technical committees of other organizations
or of government agencies, and outstanding contributions
to SAE International technical committee work in the form of
research, test methods and procedures, or development of
standards.
