FIRST STANDARD ON PREVENTION OF FOREIGN OBJECT DAMAGE ON AIRCRAFT PUBLISHED
The first-ever technical standard on the prevention of foreign
object damage (FOD) on aircraft, AS9146, "Foreign Object
Damage (FOD) Prevention Program - Requirements for Aviation,
Space, and Defense Organizations," was issued by the G-14
Americas Aerospace Quality Standards Committee in April.
AS9146 can be used at all levels of the supply chain to mitigate
FOD risk. It defines FOD Prevention Program requirements for
organizations that design, develop, and provide aviation, space,
and defense products or services, in addition to organizations
that provide post-delivery support, including the provision of
maintenance, spare parts, or materials for their own products
and services.
Its requirements are implemented and based on the results of a
FOD risk assessment for product characteristics and operations.
Establishing and maintaining an effective FOD Prevention
Program involves using a process approach and risk based
thinking that proactively addresses the events (conditions and
actions) leading to FOD. Risk based thinking ensures FOD risk is
considered when establishing, implementing, and maintaining a
FOD Prevention Program.

FOD is a major concern in the aviation, space, and defense
industry. While there is a large amount of information and
guidance available about the prevention of FOD, this is the first
requirements standard published for industry.

SAE INTERNATIONAL TASKED BY FAA TO DEVELOP ROTORCRAFT INLET BARRIER
FILTER STANDARD
At the request of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA),
SAE International's S-12 Helicopter Powerplant Committee
has begun development of ARP6912, "Substantiation of Power
Available and Inlet Distortion Compliance for Rotorcraft Inlet
Barrier Filter Installations."

"We are pleased to be working with the FAA on the development
of this important rotorcraft standard and appreciate the trust
that the FAA has placed in SAE International to utilize industry
standards as guidance material," said David Alexander, Director
of Aerospace Standards for SAE International.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice is intended to
improve efficiency and assist with the certification process
for the installation of inlet barrier filters on rotorcraft. The
intention of the document is to identify and define methods
of compliance to power available and inlet distortion
requirements for rotorcraft with Inlet Barrier Filter (IBF)
installations. The guidance material could be used for
determining power assurance, establishing power available,
and for substantiating engine inlet distortion for
IBF installations.

The S-12 Committee will benefit from the expertise of SAE's
S-16 Turbine Engine Inlet Flow Distortion Committee as the
ARP is refined. To kick off this activity, a virtual meeting
was held in February followed by a face-to-face meeting in
conjunction with HAI Heli-Expo in Dallas in March. Stakeholders
participating included representatives from rotorcraft OEMs,
engine OEMs, operators, inlet barrier filter manufacturers,
and regulatory authorities. Anyone interested in participating
should contact Laura Feix, Aerospace Standards Engineer at
laura.feix@sae.org.
