NEW DIGITAL AND DATA STEERING GROUP HOLDS FIRST MEETING
SAE's Digital and Data Steering Group (DDSG) held its kick-off
face-to-face meeting during the SAE AeroTech Congress and
Exhibition in September. The meeting was well attended, and
included participants from the U.S. and Europe.
Formed in the fall of 2017, the DDSG emerged as a common
interest of all SAE standard groups that are impacted by
fast-growing digital and data (D&D) technologies. The
group will strategically identify emerging technologies, and
coordinate standardization activities across SAE standards
committees necessary to support D&D technologies at the
system, subsystem, and component levels, as well as within the
supporting infrastructure.

During the meeting, the group discussed topics such as how the
use of digital models and big data will act as a means to rationalize
and structure co-ordination and support to customers and
suppliers to reduce confusion and complexity and increase the
pace of adoption to support productivity improvements across the
aerospace sector. Productivity and improvement areas include but
are not limited to traceability, accuracy, time savings, connectivity,
visibility, searchability of parts, systems and personnel.
The Steering Group's activity is expected to be critical
in shaping a digitally integrated approach to design,
manufacturing, operations and maintenance through consensus
standards and other documents such as recommended
practices and information reports.

SAE PARTICIPATES IN ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING PANEL DISCUSSION
Laura Feix, Aerospace Standards Engineer, SAE International,
participated in a panel discussion entitled "Establishing and
Updating Industry Standards as New Applications Develop" at
the 5th Additive Aerospace Summit, held October 18-20 in Los
Angeles, California.
Panelists also included representatives from ASTM International,
NASA, and Penn State University.
Feix provided an overview of SAE's additive manufacturing
standards activities, including SAE's involvement in the

America Makes/ANSI Additive Manufacturing Standardization
Collaborative (AMSC), and identified the lack of publicly
available material property data as the biggest roadblock to the
development of additive manufacturing specifications.
She also answered a number of questions during and after the
panel session on SAE International's aerospace specific ALM
standards. Currently 4 SAE specifications on ALM aluminum
alloys are in ballot-resolution phase, with a further 4 on metallic
and non-metallic ALM materials in advanced draft stage.

NEW CHAIRS AND VICE CHAIRS
For the Aerospace Industry Steering Committee on Structural
Health, the new Chair is Luis Santos, Embraer. The new Vice
Chair is Clement Bockenheimer, Airbus.

The new Chair of the Integrated Vehicle Health Management
Steering Group is Ian Jennions, Cranfield University. New Vice
Chair is Ravi Rajamani, d-rr2 Consulting.
