NEW A-22 COMMITTEE TO DEVELOP STANDARDS FOR ENGINE FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS
SAE International's new A-22 Fire Protection
and Flammability Testing committee, formed
to develop industry standards for the testing
of systems and components to assist with
the design and certification of fire protection
systems, held its kickoff meeting on May 9-10 in
Cologne, Germany.
The committee was formed following a Federal
Aviation Administration (FAA) tasking request for
SAE to develop industry aerospace standards to
demonstrate compliance with FAA powerplant
fire protection requirements.
The committee's initial program of work includes

AEROSPACE STANDARDS COMMITTEES MEET AT HELI-EXPO
Three SAE aerospace standards committees met in conjunction
with the Helicopter Association International's (HAI) Heli-Expo,

rotorcraft manufacturers. Once the results are analyzed, the
focus will pivot to developing an Aerospace Information Report
containing guidance to operators on ground icing prevention
and remediation and including a definition of a rotorcraft critical
surface.

The G-26 Committee continues to develop AS6342, Minimum
Operation Performance Standard for Helicopter Hoist, to support
an FAA tasking request. The S-12 Committee was reactivated
in 2017 to address FAA tasking requests to provide alternate
means to substantiate that engine inlet distortion limits have
not been exceeded by the modification of the rotorcraft to
include an airframe-mounted engine inlet barrier filter as well to
define means to determine and verify power available for IBFequipped engine installations. During the March S-12 meeting,
work focused on the development of ARP6912, Substantiation of
Power Available and Inlet Distortion Compliance for Rotorcraft
Inlet Barrier Filter Installations.

In addition, Laura Feix, Aerospace Standards Engineer, SAE
International, delivered a presentation to HAI's Fly Neighborly/
Environmental Committee related to SAE's A-21 Committee on
Aircraft Noise Measure and Noise Aviation Emission Modeling.
A-21 is revitalizing their Rotorcraft Noise Project Work Team
and is soliciting participants from both rotorcraft OEMs and
rotorcraft operations.

The Rotorcraft Ground Deicing Working Group is interested
in means to increase helicopter availability during winter
months. The group plans to conduct a survey of operators and
