• In 2009, SAE International updated a critical standard that helps engineers identify flaws in the assembly and design of ground vehicles. Standard J1739, “Potential Failure Mode and Effects Analysis in Design (Design FMEA) and Potential Failure Mode and Effects Analysis in Manufacturing and Assembly Processes (Process FMEA),” includes updated charts for ranking failure modes and de-emphasizes the use of the Risk Priority Number as the primary factor in determining preventative or corrective actions. There is still much room for growth. Opportunities exist in the electrification of the vehicle, vehicle connectivity, embedded software, battery standardization, and a host of other mobility electronics projects. To reach these goals, SAE International is entering nontraditional areas of vehicle standardization, such as nano materials, chemicals management, and supplier-chain management.
Globalization of the industry increases opportunities for ground vehicle standards. SAE International sees opportunities to grow the commercial vehicle sector by expanding its global footprint. SAE International is creating global teams to collaborate with industry. This will involve sharing technical information, increasing the number of SAE Fellows from the commercial vehicle sector, and providing industry benchmarking in an anonymous environment. In 2009, SAE International held all three of its marquee industry events – AeroTech Congress and Exhibition (aerospace), SAE World Congress (automotive) and SAE Commercial Vehicle Congress (commercial vehicle). Thousands of people from all over the world attended these events, which drew host company and executive leadership support from some of the top companies in mobility engineering, including Boeing, Honda, Bosch and Caterpillar.
