AWIM – Fuel Cell Challenge was launched in January 2009. In cooperation with General Motors, Detroit Public School students became the first in the country to accept the new challenge at the North American International Auto Show at COBO Center in Detroit. By November, SAE International had distributed nearly 100 Fuel Cell kits to teachers across the United States. The Honeywell-SAE Student Automotive Design Challenge expanded its reach in 2009. The program launched simultaneously in August at eleven schools from eight countries — one each from the Czech Republic, China, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Switzerland and four from the U.S. More than 400 students shared their work with their international peers via an online forum. The forum enabled teachers, students and volunteers to post photographs of their classes, e-mail each other, and share information about their work.
AWIM summer programs continued to grow as 600 inner-city students took part in the Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) through a partnership with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). More than 75 students participated in the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) SAE Gateway Camp Program, which is a partnership formed with the SME Education Foundation. CDS and AWIM received funds from the SAE Foundation. The SAE Foundation also supported international awards and scholarship programs. The SAE Foundation worked with corporations, individuals, private foundations and others to support SAE International’s educational programs.
