defining our future

•	 Sustainability	plans	were	created	and	put	into	action	for	SAE	 International and the SAE Foundation. As the names imply, the plans were designed to bolster the financial strength of both organizations. Of	course,	these	are	just	a	few	examples	of	the	successes	that	SAE	 International	realized	in	2009.	This	annual	report	details	many	more	 of those successes, as well as provides a glimpse of the exciting and optimistic future for our organization. Does	that	mean	that	2009	was	clear	of	setbacks?	Of	course	not;	 all	of	us	in	the	mobility	engineering	profession	–	in	all	of	business	–	 experienced challenges in 2009. But, as mentioned earlier, tough times don’t	define	people	or	organizations	–	the	events	that	follow	those	 tough times do. Through	the	leadership	and	inspired	involvement	of	our	members,	and	 the hard work of our employees, SAE International turned 2009 from a year that easily could have been cast aside and left for disappointment and	turned	it	into	a	year	ripe	with	successes—successes	that	offer	 inspiration	and	hope	for	2010	and	beyond.	 For	several	years	now	SAE	International’s	Board	of	Directors	has	 been crafting a “Vision 2020.” As the name implies, the plan offers a

snapshot of what we want SAE International to look like in the year 2020. Vision 2020 is ambitious, goal-oriented and defined by success –	the	same	characteristics	of	SAE	International	and	its	members.	 Innovation and leadership have taken the mobility engineering industry from humble beginnings to what has become a technology-driven staple of everyone’s lives; regardless of what country they’re from or what language they speak. Those	same	characteristics	–	innovation	and	leadership	–	will	propel	 our	industry,	and	our	world,	even	further.	Throughout	that	journey,	SAE	 International	will	be	there	–	as	a	technical	resource,	as	a	standards	 provider, and as a professional development partner.
