Intellectual property is critical to the engineering enterprise. SAE takes great pride in being a steward of legacy material as well as creating a growing repository or knowledge about emerging technologies critical to the future success of the mobility-related industries. This past year, the Society digitized and made available its historical standard portfolio of 16,600 standards, which brings the overall number of electronic standards to more than 27,000. In addition SAE digitized its magazines dating back to 1912 and archived nearly 2,000 magazine articles, making them available for purchase online. In 201 SAE completed a three-year investment in 1 upgrading and extending its Content Management System. The project was completed on time and under-budget—and it achieved far more than it set out to do. Highlights include: •	 A	new	state-of-the-art	content	database	 management system was developed and now maintains all of the Society’s intellectual property in XML or pdf formats. •	 A	proprietary,	industry-specific	taxonomy	 was created for use with the Society’s intellectual property. This provides SAE with a competitive tool. 12 •	 All	legacy	content	(including	standards,	technical	 papers, books, magazine content, professional development courses, etc.) was ingested into the system, which provides for the first time an ability to integrate our entire content portfolio with a single taxonomy and make it available through the SAE Digital Library. •	 The	new	CMS	allows	for	multi-media	formats,	 and now enables the Society to capture and serve up video and other rich media formats. •	 Upgrading	the	SAE	Digital	Library	and	 enabling a host of new products, including products for the middle market, such as collections and subscriptions. Sales of SAE Journal titles increased as direct result of improvements made to the overall publishing program. The biggest growth was in online Journal sales, which more than doubled those in 2010. The increase in sales helps to broaden the Society’s market penetration and bring greater recognition to the long-term research value of SAE International’s Journal papers. SAE continued to increase its global market for technical papers with great success. New online technical paper collections resulted in more than 60 percent of sales from outside North America.
