Ground Vehicle Standards
SAE Matters in ground vehicle standards. In 2012,
SAE revised 143 ground vehicle standards and
published 26 brand new standards.
Some highlights of 2012 included:
* SAE International signed a distributorship
agreement with partner organization, China
Automotive Technology and Research Center for
sales of SAE H-Point Machines in China.
* A two-year research program with the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration for the
Safety Performance of Rechargeable Energy
Storage Systems continued in 2012 and is
scheduled for completion in 2013.
* Under a contract from the National Renewable
Energy Laboratory, SAE Ground Vehicle
Standards facilitated and accelerated the
development of standards and recommended
practices for fuel cell powered vehicles in order
to smoothly and uniformly transition fuel cell
vehicles into the marketplace.
* The Mobile Air Conditioning Refrigerant
Blend project expanded in 2012 and included
additional international partners.
SAE Matters in electric vehicles. In 2012, SAE
International issued the newest revision to technical
standard J1772™ in a document titled, Surface Vehicle
Recommended Practice: SAE Electric Vehicle and
Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle Conductive Charge
Coupler. Conductive charging is a method for
connecting a PEV to the electric power grid to charge
the battery and other vehicle electrical systems,
establish a reliable grounding path and exchange
control information between the vehicle and the supply
equipment to facilitate charging.
SAE J2990, Hybrid and EV First and Second
Responder Recommended Practice, published in
November, describes the potential consequences
associated with hazards from EVs and suggests
common procedures to protect emergency
responders; tow and/or recovery, store, repair,
and assist salvage personnel after an incident has
occurred with an electrified vehicle.
SAE Matters to the National Highway Transportation
Safety Administration as SAE received the official
Request for Proposal from the agency for a new
five-year contract to provide contract administration
services for the WMI Program.
Another milestone was reached in the SAE
Certified Power Program. Higher than average
submittals of SAE J 1349 passenger car engine
certifications resulted in SAE now exceeding 200
automotive engines in our database. In addition, we
are now approaching 40 SAE J 1995 small engine
certifications.
Formal approval was obtained by the Ambulance
Manufacturers Division of the National Truck
Equipment Association to transfer its standards work
to SAE and to have SAE become the administering
SDO.
