Pre-professional Education
Colleges and universities know SAE Matters,
because it helps provide the academic skills students
and hands-on knowledge needed to succeed in the
professional world.
For the 20th year, growth and participation in the
Collegiate Design Series have continued to climb. The
Collegiate Design Series provides opportunities not
taught in classrooms, such as team building, project
management and cost management.
Throughout 2012, SAE hosted 10 Collegiate Design
Series competitions. More than 700 teams and nearly
7,000 participants registered for the events. SAE
Matters around the world as more than 100 teams
from outside North America participated. At Aero
Design West®, 35 percent of the participants were
from outside of North America. Volunteer support
remained strong as more than 1,100 individuals
donated their time and talents at competitions in the
U.S.
Formula SAE® debuted in Lincoln, Neb., taking
advantage of the spacious Lincoln Airpark and
offering a more central location for the event, helping
reduce travel time and overall costs for participants.
SAE continued preparations for the new Formula
SAE Electric competition, which debuts in 2013.
Formula SAE Electric shows how SAE Matters as
a forward-thinking organization, continuing to provide
opportunities for students to work with current and
future technologies.
A World in Motion
SAE Matters because of its education programs.
The A World In Motion®
(AWIM) program reached
into the classrooms of more than 75,000 elementary
and middle school children to share the excitement
of science, mathematics, engineering and technology.
In addition, AWIM program offerings increased by
67 percent through the release of the AWIM Primary
Program.
The Summer Engineering Experience for Kids,
AWIM's partnership program with the National
Society of Black Engineers, expanded in 2012 and
has reached more than 7,000 inner-city students in
New Orleans, Los Angeles and Houston, in addition
to continuing to serve students in Oakland and San
Diego, Calif., and Washington D.C.
With the release of the AWIM Primary Activities, SAE's
unique brand of science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics (STEM) programs now span a students'
academic career from kindergarten to college.
F1 In Schools™
SAE International acquired the U.S. rights to F1 In
Schools, an internationally renowned STEM program
that has inspired high school students around the
globe through an engineering design challenge
centered on the Formula One™ experience. In
2012, SAE hosted the U.S. National Competition in
conjunction with the Formula SAE Michigan event.
