STEMMING THE SOLUTION WITH:
A WORLD IN MOTION
In a very special school in Cleveland, Ohio, A
World In MotionĀ® (AWIM) is breaking down
barriers and facilitating, not only academic
learning, but also social and emotional learning.
The Thomas Jefferson Newcomers Academy
in Cleveland, Ohio is a special school designed
for newly immigrated students to the Cleveland
Metropolitan School District. The school is to
immerse students in the English language and
the American schooling system to ensure their
rapid integration and success in the school. Each
student comes to the school with characteristics
as unique as the countries from which they hail. One of the greatest obstacles these
students encounter is language, but other obstacles include exposure to formal
schooling and, in some instances, trauma.
Having taught 5th grade at Thomas Jefferson for over 10 years, Mr. Samuel Rowan
understands the importance of using interactive, hands-on experiences in teaching
his diverse group of learners. Ten years ago Rowan was exposed to AWIM's JetToy
challenge and knew immediately that the carefully framed instructional goals of AWIM,
which is structured on the Engineering Design Experience (EDE), would be beneficial
to the unique learning, social and emotional needs of his students. Rowan explained
that last year he had students from 12 different countries speaking at least 6 different
languages. These language differences can go as deep as even sound and writing
systems, making communication exceptionally challenging. Additionally, student
exposure to formal schooling ranged from well prepared to having never been formally
educated.
"The unique structure of the AWIM curriculum in promoting a collaborative environment
facilitates communication and fosters more than STEM education. It offers social and
emotional lessons that students need to be successful throughout their schooling and
beyond." Rowan explained. The entire process creates what Rowan refers to as the
"authentic need for language". Each member designs something and through a process
