U.S. Naval Academy Builds Leaders Through Engineering Jon Sharbo makes the point that while the military top down structure ingrained in these students can hinder the "team" in the beginning stages of design, "we have to learn to relinquish command and rank and give authority to the team member who is the best at certain aspects of the project and this is a different philosophy from which the military operates." Overall, these USNA teams are up to the added challenges and do an excellent job of representing engineering talent at the Academy. These fine young midshipmen will join their fleets upon graduation serving the Navy where they are most needed, but Sharbo says he does look forward to returning to engineering when his service is complete. 9
