SAE Foundation Annual Report 2015 - 15

Michigan Teachers Honored
SAE was proud to honor two
Michigan teachers in 2015 for
their tremendous commitment
to education and their dedication
to helping their students achieve
success.
Dr. Raghunath
Khetan, winner
of the Gary
Dickinson Award
for Teaching
Excellence, has
incorporated the
A World In MotionĀ® program in
his classrooms since 2008. As the
founder of the Indus Center for
Academic Excellence in Lathrup
Village, Michigan, Dr. Khetan is
passionate about the importance
of science, technology, math

and engineering education.
He founded the Indus Center
to engage gifted students in
advanced critical thinking, math
and science opportunities and
uses AWIM as an integral part
of the curriculum. Students
attend classes on weekends as a
supplement to their regular school
activities. Dr. Khetan volunteers
his time on weekends to teach
students and devotes countless
hours to the school.
SAE was proud to
honor Stephanie
Gendron a teacher
at Detroit Country
Day School in
Beverly Hills,
Michigan, with the

Lloyd Reuss Award for Teaching
Excellence. From the moment
the school implemented AWIM in
classrooms, Stephanie was eager
to share the experience with her
students. Her enthusiasm for the
program is clear to colleagues,
parents and, most of all, to her
students. Stephanie frequently
records her students as they
perform their AWIM challenges
and then uses those recordings
as an opportunity to review
with students what may have
worked or not worked during the
challenge and engages them in
deeper discussion and thinking
about what they've learned. Her
colleagues praise her for her ability
to explain engineering concepts
clearly to students, the way she

creativity incorporates unique
resources to help students learn
and for brainstorming with fellow
teachers about how she constantly
elevates students' experiences in
the classroom.
"Both of these teachers exemplify
what it means to be a true
advocate for education and for
children," said Chris Ciuca, Director
of SAE Pre-Professional Education.
"We are delighted to honor them
with these prestigious awards and
are proud that they have chosen
to incorporate AWIM into their
classrooms."
