SAE Foundation Annual Report 2017 - 12

NEW AWARD BRINGS
RECOGNITION TO AN
IMPORTANT FIELD
SAE Foundation to establish
the SAE/Ramesh Agarwal
Computational Fluid Dynamics
Award. The award will
recognize individuals who have
made significant science and
engineering contributions to
computational fluid dynamics
and its applications within the
aerospace and ground vehicle
industries.

Ramesh Agarwal is no stranger
to awards. The William Palm
Professor of Engineering at
Washington University in St.
Louis has received dozens of
them over his 40-plus year
career. When Agarwal received
SAE's prestigious Medal of
Honor in 2015, he noticed that
his chosen field of computational fluid dynamics was not
represented among SAE's award
offerings and he decided to
change that.
With the support of his wife
Sugita and his sons, Vivek
and Gautum, Agarwal and
his family made a gift to the

"The field of computational
fluid dynamics (CFD) has
an impact on the mobility
industry and beyond," said
Agarwal. "This award will give
recognition not only to the
accomplishments of scientists
in this discipline but will also
help give prominence to the
field of CFD."
Agarwal has spent 16 years
in industry and 23 years in
academia working on fundamental and applied problems
in CFD, beginning his career
at McDonnell Douglas. He
established the CFD lab and
serves as director of Aerospace
Engineering Program at
Washington University in
St. Louis.

He is a Fellow in
22 professional
societies and has
served on several
university, industry
and government
committees/advisory
boards.
In addition to his
significant scientific
and engineering
accomplishments and
his activity in professional societies, Agarwal
is generous with both
his time and resources.
He volunteers for
organizations such as
the Engineers without
Borders and Scientists
without Borders. He
also helps the homeless
and "adopts" children in
need in India, providing
them with funds for
food, clothing and
education.
