TOMORROW'S
ENGINEERS AT WORK
Creating the most efficient
and smooth-running balloonpowered vehicle was the task
for 500 fifth graders in Atlanta
during the SAE A World
In Motion® (AWIM) JetToy
Competition hosted by Kia
Motors Manufacturing Georgia
(KMMG) in November.
Benchmarked to the national
standards, the AWIM program
incorporates integrated
STEM learning experiences
through hands-on activities
that reinforce classroom STEM
lessons. Working in design
teams, students from Georgia
and Alabama culminated
their classroom experience
by building and testing
model JetToy cars that they
have analyzed for weeks.
Throughout the competition,
students engaged in a variety
of distance, accuracy and
timed events. Dozens of KMMG
volunteers came out to judge
the competitions.
"By combining hands-on
projects with the real-world
experience offered by Kia
volunteers, we hope that
students will understand the
value of not only engineering
and design, but skills such as
team work, problem solving,
and innovation," said Stuart C.
Countess, Chief Administrative
Officer, KMMG.
"We are committed to preparing
students with the skills they will
need to be successful in their
future careers."
KMMG is located in Troup
County, Georgia where the
median income is 23% lower

than the national average. In
2012, the SAE Foundation and
KMMG started discussions
centered on how best to help
the community's children and
future generations receive
much-needed science,
technology, engineering and
math (STEM) education.

As the plan developed,
a cohesive partnership
between KMMG and the
SAE Foundation resulted
in the creation of a unique
education program that was
officially launched in spring
of 2013 with four elementary
level AWIM programs. The
success of the initial launch
further strengthened KMMG's
long-term commitment to
the development of a local
outreach plan that will result
in long-term district-wide
success for area teachers
and school students.

Since 2013,
the program has
continued to grow
reaching students
in Troup, Harris,
and Meriwether
counties in Georgia,
and Lanett and
Chambers counties
in Alabama.

With Kia's support, over 36,000
students have experienced AWIM
