value will be discussed from the perspectives of both physicians and the public, particularly as related to the medical profession's commitment to self-regulation. There are several
innovative changes occurring in the continuing certification
program to best achieve alignment with the program's purpose, provide added value, and address diplomate concerns.
The details of these program changes along with early data
will be described along with how the Board and the American
Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAOHNS) are collaboratively working together to maximize the
added value. Details will be described about how feedback is
being used to make substantial improvements in the program
that are responsive to the needs of the public and diplomates.
The major findings from the Commission advisory report that
addressed the future of continuing certification in the United
States will be summarized to additionally inform the discussion.
This topic has relevance to most practicing otolaryngologists-
head and neck surgeons in the United States in all specialty
areas. The format will be talks by leaders from American
Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS)
and AAO-HNS, followed by an interactive discussion with the
audience.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Explain the purpose and value of
continuing board certification for otolaryngologists and the
public. (2) Compare prior program details to the changes
being made that best align with the purpose of continuing certification. (3) Recognize how the collaboration between the
ABOHNS and the AAO-HNS Foundation will maximize the
value of the continuing certification program.
Developing Professional Expertise: Plan,
Publish, and Present

Session Description: In his article "Making of an Expert,"
author K. Anders Ericsson states, "Consistently and overwhelmingly, the evidence showed that experts are always
made, not born." Developing professional expertise is very
feasible-but it does require choosing an appropriate career
niche, developing innovative research, and being able to demonstrate knowledge and proficiency. It is attainable with the
right mentorship, dedication, and perseverance. The panelists
will discuss practical aspects of identifying and developing a
career niche. In addition, technical aspects of presenting
nationally, whether as a panelist or expert lecturer, will be discussed. This includes practical tips on how to choose a topic to
present, how to seek presenters, and techniques for successfully moderating panels. Lastly, the experts will discuss how to
develop a research portfolio, including maturing projects into
publications.
Outcome Objectives: (1) List ways to choose an appropriate
niche for career development. (2) Demonstrate ways to develop
a research portfolio aimed toward reinforcing your career
goals. (3) Identify practical tips on how to choose a topic to
present and demonstrate expertise in a chosen career niche.

Sustain Something Big

Session Description: Every impressive, expansive enterprise
begins in a single moment, with the birth of a single idea.
Some ideas remain vapor, never amounting to anything more,
whereas others become not only a reality but an ever-growing,
long-standing, self-propagating venture. The difference be--
tween vapor and venture often lies within the person who has
that first idea. He or she takes that seed, cultivates it, grows it,
and fosters a life that allows the endeavor to bear fruit of its
own. This prospect can be daunting, and those who have successfully built and sustained large undertakings have often
had experiences that, if shared, could be of lasting benefit for
those in all stages of their careers. This expert panel thus features leaders in our field who have developed substantive, farreaching endeavors that have had regional, national, and
international impact. Our panelists will share how and why
they pursued certain ideas and turned them into reality. They
will discuss the key pivot points and insights they felt were
seminal during the establishment and growth of their wellknown works, including the founding, expansion, and leadership of internationally influential organizations, journals,
clinical practice guidelines, academic works, and departments.

Health Care Policy and Reform: A Primer
for the Otolaryngologist

Session Description: The complex US health care system can
be difficult to navigate as a young or practicing physician.
This MBA-educated panel comprises physicians, health care
analysts, and a medical school dean who will address challenging dilemmas in our health care system and offer the audience a perspective on the past, present, and future of the US
health care system. The panelists will address concerns of
physicians in training, new, and established clinicians. Using
case models and simulations, the audience will have the
opportunity to interact with this expert panel.
