Conclusions: Women's representation in invited speaking
roles at COSM is similar to or better than overall female representation in academic otolaryngology. Gender representation in these roles did not change significantly from 2015 to
2019 despite increasing gender parity. Women have fewer
keynote speaker and invited lecturer opportunities, which may
affect career opportunities and academic promotion.

The Gender Representation in Recognition
Awards in Otolaryngology

Objectives: The proportion of women in otolaryngology
has steadily increased from 11.2% in 2007 to 15.8% in 2018.
Despite this progress, women continue to hold fewer appointments in senior academic positions. Academic awards play
an important role in the trajectory of academic careers. This
study examines gender representation in recognition awards
given by societies in otolaryngology between 2009 and
2019.
Methods: A retrospective demographic analysis was conducted of publicly available data of recognition awards in otolaryngology societies from 2009 to 2019. Data from 11 awards
were analyzed for overall gender ratio of recipients, gender
ratio by society, and change over time.
Results: Of 138 publicly available awards in otolaryngology
societies in the past decade, 27 (19.6%) were given to women.
The TRIO Mosher Award had the highest female representation of 30.8% female recipients. Societies in neuro-otology/
otology and facial plastic surgery had lower female representation of 8.0% and 6.0%, respectively. No temporal trends
were observed; however, in 2015, women received 4.8% of
awards in comparison with 36.4% in 2018. Notably, the AOS
Award of Merit, ANS House-Hitselberger, and AAFPRS F.
The Mark Rafaty Memorial Award were not awarded to a
woman this decade.
Conclusions: In the past decade, women received recognition
awards proportionate to overall gender representation in academic
otolaryngology. Gender representation varied by subspecialty,
with more female awardees in laryngology-bronchoesophagology
in comparison with facial plastics and otology/neuro-otology.
Professional awards are important indicators of achievement and
can affect career advancement; therefore, women should be supported in pursuit of these awards, and factors affecting gender discrepancies warrant further study.
How to Manage Halitosis as an
Otolaryngologist

Countless metropolitan people of Seoul worry about their
own bad breath-halitosis. Usually halitosis is more perceptible to practicing doctors closer to the mouth of the patient.
Dentists are the closest, and otolaryngologists are the next! Is

that distance determining the exceeding number of papers
dealing with halitosis by dentists? Even if I admit it, causes of
halitosis cannot exclude acute/chronic sinusitis, nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal/laryngeal foreign bodies (mainly food
material), laryngopharyngeal reflux, and mouth dryness.
Aren't these causes pushing otolaryngologists to examine and
control this huge chemical volcano-halitosis? During the
encounter with these clients, the otolaryngologist should
check thoroughly the orifice of sinuses, nasal cavity, nasopharynx, oropharynx, and larynx with endoscopy. Here the
author presents various cases of food materials, "-lith," packed
inside diverse crypts of the pharynx and even the larynx. Also,
the author developed an efficient method that could remove
densely packed tonsilloliths instantly and completely. This
maneuver and habitual change have helped hundreds of
patients to escape from halitosis and made them more attractive. This presentation includes high-definition photography,
illustration, and video footage to enhance the role and expand
the field of practicing otolaryngologists.
Impact of Secondhand Smoking on ENT
Diseases: A Multicenter Study in Japan

Although tobacco smoking has been reported as a potential
risk factor for tonsillitis and sinusitis in inflammatory diseases
of the upper aerodigestive tract, a risk of secondhand smoking
(SHS) for otolaryngologic diseases has not been well assessed
yet. We performed a questionnaire survey regarding current
smoking and SHS in 3 tertiary care hospitals. We made the
questionnaire comparable with the National Health and
Nutrition Survey 2018, which is publicly available on an open
website of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in
Japan (n = 6598). The questionnaire was collected from
patients who were admitted, underwent surgery, or were
administered intravenous drugs at the outpatient clinic over
1 year and 3 months. Patients who were younger than 20 years
or who did not answer all questions were excluded. Included
patients were divided into groups by disorders and symptoms.
We analyzed the groups that had 50 or more patients. We compared information about sex, age, history of current smoking,
and SHS for the previous month to the results of the national
survey. A total of 1387 eligible patients were identified and
divided into the groups. We examined the groups of acute tonsillitis (n = 80), recurrent tonsillitis (n = 82), facial palsy (n =
70), sudden deafness (n = 72), and chronic sinusitis (n = 87).
History of SHS in acute tonsillitis (in workplaces, P < .01; in
restaurants, P < .01; in leisure places, P < .01), recurrent tonsillitis (in restaurants, P < .01; in leisure places, P < .01), and
facial palsy (in leisure places, P < .01) was significantly
greater than in the national survey. We found that SHS had a
potential impact on the pathogenesis of acute tonsillitis, recurrent tonsillitis, and facial palsy.
