Comprehensive

important, actionable, new data. This program thus highlights
recent publications that substantiate changing clinical practice
in children and adults. Topics addressed include ear disease,
chronic rhinosinusitis, tonsillectomy, and head and neck
malignancy, among others. The selected publications span the
spectrum of daily pediatric, general, and head and neck practice. All-new publications and data are presented for 2020,
including key action items as they relate to existing standards.
The panel encompasses the editorial leadership from top-tier
otolaryngology journals as well as leadership from the clinical
practice guidelines and consensus statements endorsed by
national professional organizations.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Review how recent publications are
changing our daily practice in pediatric otolaryngology, general otolaryngology, and head and neck surgery. (2) Discuss
significant, valid, and actionable data from publications within
the past 1 to 3 years. (3) Analyze and interpret significant,
valid, and actionable literature.
Scary Cases 2020

Session Description: The Scary Cases 2020 session uses a
case-based, interactive approach to providing education in
patient care and risk management. Exceptionally scary cases
presented by well-known experts and experienced clinicians
will focus on what has gone wrong in the management of otolaryngology patients. Each expert will present a specific case
that was difficult to manage, had unexpected morbidity, or
resulted in litigation. Legal aspects of the case will be discussed by a malpractice attorney. Attendees will participate
with an audience-response system for key decisions during
the case. Difficult cases are often great sources of learning.
This session will provide education on how to anticipate and
avoid unwanted outcomes.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Identify potential pitfalls inherent
to the practice of otolaryngology that may lead to adverse outcomes. (2) Examine legal principles of medical malpractice
and learn ways to minimize risk of malpractice in everyday
practice. (3) List ways to maintain physician and staff safety
when encountering threatening behaviors from patients.
Shifting Sands: The COVID-19 "Science"
That Informs ENT Practice in the Fog of
War

Session Description: The health care crisis precipitated by
the rapid spread of COVID-19 created the need for timely
information across the medical community worldwide. This
resulted in an avalanche of "scientific" publications, all with
the intent of informing colleagues and improving care. Not all
these publications were created equal in terms of scientific
rigor and accuracy. Moderated by the cochair of the American
Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery's

Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Committee, this
panel will take a critical look at the literature produced and the
process necessary to assess the value. Panelists will also look
at alternative pathways that may be more effective in future
times of need.
Specialty-Specific Clinical Practice Guideline:
Opioid Prescribing for Analgesia After
Common Otolaryngology Operations

Session Description: Pain is a typical experience after surgery and has been reported in 80% of patients who have
undergone surgery. Nearly 60% of patients report that postoperative pain is the most common concern after surgery.
Control of pain after surgery can be in the form of opioids,
nonopioid analgesics, and/or nonpharmacologic therapies
such as acupuncture. Opioids are commonly prescribed for
control of postoperative pain, and one study has shown that
surgeons prescribe opioids second most commonly-surpassed only by pain medicine specialists. The use of opioids
has come under scrutiny, however, because of the recent
nationwide epidemic in opioid dependence and opioid overdose-related deaths. Studies have shown that there is a significant risk of chronic opioid use even when used as a
short-term treatment for pain. Nearly 10% of the patients who
were prescribed opioids for short-term use were shown to
continue use of opioids after 1 year. The purpose of this specialty-specific clinical practice guideline is to provide clinicians with evidence-based recommendations on postoperative
management of pain for common otolaryngology surgical
procedures, specifically focusing on opioids. In addition, a
goal of the guideline is to identify quality improvement
opportunities in assessment of patients, management of side
effects and complications, and reducing variations in care.
This guideline's target patient is any individual who has identified with pain within the first 30 days after undergoing a
common otolaryngologic procedure. The target audience of
this guideline are otolaryngologists who perform surgeries
and manage pain after surgical procedures.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Discuss evidence-based recommendations on postoperative management of pain for common ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgeries. (2) Identify quality
improvement opportunities in postoperative management of
pain for common ENT surgeries. (3) List the ways to reduce
variations in care.
