SAMPE’s Fall Technical Conference and Exhibition held in Salt Lake City, UT was a huge success in drawing 1464 attendees to an exhibit hall featuring over 130 exhibiting companies and an excellent leading edge conference technical program. SAMPE’s program was also co-located with SME’s Tooling for Composites 2010 Conference for the first time. “The wide geographic and professional range of our conference participants plays a major role in its success,” said Allan Crasto, PhD, SAMPE President and Associate Director at the University of Dayton Research Institute. “Our association is unique in that U.S. and international governments, military, academia, and industry all contribute to the technical presentations that reflect the stateof-the-art in materials and processes.” SAMPE’s attendees included engineers, scientists, technologists and educators from throughout the materials and process engineering industry. Event attendees were also treated to two strong keynote presentations. The first took place Tuesday, given by Dr. Gary Fischman, Future Strategy Solutions. His keynote presentation on “Creating the Needed Materials for the 21st Century” was met with a great response. On Wednesday, Graham Barnes, Engenuity Ltd., followed with a keynote presentation on “The Plastics and Composites Intensive Vehicle (PCIV) 2020 Initiative: Creating One Giant Leap Forward for Mankind.” The SAMPE fall program offered many educational opportunities for M&P companies and their staff. Conference programs included 165 paper presentations, 6 educational tutorials, 4 panels, 5 featured lectures, 35 sessions encompassing topics and issues prevalent throughout the industry. In addition, a program review of U.S. programs on out-of-autoclave (OOA) technology was offered in a special session the first day of the technical program. Each educational program combined real-world applications with research and development to provide information that can immediately be applied to current and future projects. “We’re pleased with the positive response this event has produced,” said John Green, SAMPE General Co-Chair and owner of The Green Sales Guy. “With an excellent conference program and sold-out exhibit hall, this event is everything a professional in this industry would expect and more.” The SAMPE’s Awards Luncheon featured Apa Sherpa, the only human in history to reach the top of the world (Mount Everest) 20 times. His presentation “Reflections from Twenty Visits to the Top of the World,” which described not only the dangers related to climbing Mount Everest, but also the living conditions within the region, was very well received by the attendees. The conference Outstanding Technical Paper Award was presented to Prof. Don Radford (Colorado State University) for he and his co-author’s (P.T. Nivala) work “Process Improvements for the RTM of Composite Intake Valves for Internal Combustion Engines.”
