Because of flow/quality issues with T650-35 6K in an early five harness satin (5HS) evaluation, most of the carbon fabric characterization was conducted with T650-35 3K eight harness satin (8HS). Although the quality of T650-35 6K 5HS improved to satisfactory levels with Cycom®5320-1, the program chose to continue with the T650-35 8HS carbon fiber product form. Early high modulus evaluations were promising with HR40/X5320. As a result, further evaluations were conducted with HR40, HS 40, and M46J with Cycom®5320-1. Pre-impregnated peel ply, Style 108 glass, and Astroquartz III Style 4581 (on X5320 and 5320-1) were also evaluated in the program. Kinetic and viscosity characterization of the resins has been conducted by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) for process modeling, in collaboration with Boeing and Convergent Manufacturing Technology. Figure 5 shows the kinetic submodel developed by AFRL using RAVEN, a commercial software program from the Canadian-based company, Convergent Manufacturing Technology, Inc. (CMT)25. Figure 6 provides an example of a 3D surface plot generated by the RAVEN kinetic submodel. Results from the viscosity submodel produced in RAVEN are illustrated in Figure 7. The recent effort, October 2009 – April 2010, is reported in reference5. Features, Elements, Subcomponents, and Components Figure 8 illustrates some of the feature based manufacturing studies conducted during the program. Beginning on the lower right side of the arrow is a rabbit detail panel, which was part of the characterization for each resin system variant as discussed in1. To simulate scale up to large parts, 5.5 m (18 ft) panels were constructed with three ply build-up sections. These panels were sealed on three edges to simulate a 11 m (36 ft) part. The image in Figure 8 is the c-scan output for the Cycom®5320-1T40-800B unitape panel (cut into 2.7 m (9 ft) sections for ease of handling). Near the arrowhead on the left side is a sandwich construction with two Astroquartz III Style 4581/X5320 skins, demonstrating processing with the quartz prepreg and in sandwich construction. Evaluations with quartz/5320-1 are planned at the time of this writing.
