Europe News & Views Gary Turner European Section Editor A new President for SAMPE Europe As of the first of the year, SAMPE Europe has a new president: Prof. Paolo Ermanni, from the Center for Structural Technologies, at the Zurich ETH (Federal Technical University Zurich) in Switzerland. More should be forthcoming in the next Journal issue. SUTEC11 - the first conference of SAMPE Ukraine Victor Shulepov reports that SUTEC 11 (SAMPE Ukraine Technical Conference) - the first conference of the SAMPE Ukraine organization was held in Kiev, Ukraine on October 6th, 2011. The theme was “New Materials and Technologies for Aerospace Industry” and hosted by the Aviation Technology Research Institute of Ukraine (UkrRIAT). There were three sessions at the conference: “Management Economics,” “Research Manufacturing Technology, Simulation” and “Composite Materials for the Aerospace Industry”. A total of 17 papers were presented by speakers from Antonov, Ivchenko-Progress, National Academy of Sciences, UkrRIAT, National Aviation University, Kiev Polytechnic Institute, and other Ukrainian and Russian institutions. The keynote lecture “Cost Effective Aircraft Production – Ukrainian Aspect” was presented by Dr. G. Krivov, Chairman of the Board, SAMPE Ukraine. Among other papers were: “SAMPE Ukraine as a tool for the advancement of knowledge and experience in the area of materials and technologies”, “Technologies for hole generation in composite materials and methods for quality test of machining”, “Technologies for extension of life cycle stages of gas turbine engine structure components”, “Simulation of reinforced composite material cutting – achievements and prospects”, “Tensile and fatigue tests of highly loaded composite-composite and composite-titanium joints”, “Development and industrialization of the knitting-soldering wire-net for carbon plastic lightning protection in aircraft manufacturing”, “New dispersion-strengthened materials based on aluminum alloys”. The accompanying photograph shows the conference speakers. All the papers from this event will later be published in a special edition of Technological Systems magazine being edited by UkrRIAT. Composite Aircraft Repair Initiative The following report and request stems in part from discussions this editor had at SETEC 11, with Prof. Francis Collombet, Toulouse University, Institut Clément Ader (ICA)/ Clément Ader, Groupe “Matériaux & Structures Composites” (MSC) regarding their large scale composite aircraft repair development initiative. From various industry sources, come some significant thoughts regarding the challenges faced with large-scale composite aircraft structures repair. Tobias Hundhausen, vice-president business development of Air Berlin, for example, expects in the future more large-scale repairs in the hangar and many more composite repairs in general. He is unsure how to deal with large-scale damage. Christian Weckesser, project manager for 787 aircraft engineering at LHT in Frankfurt stated that "With repairs beyond a certain size, we fear that we will quickly get to a point where the SRM [Structural Repair Manual] will not be sufficient, and that we then have to talk to Boeing (for example) and evaluate the damage together with them. And that will cost time." Dirk Winkler, LHT senior sales executive: "However, we also believe that if we face a nonstandard problem, the delays and downtimes may be significantly longer than on current aircraft". 14 SAMPE Journal, Volume 48, No. 1, January/February 2012
