President’s Message Dr. Kate Thorp U.S. Air Force Research Lab, WPAFB Katie.Thorp@frontier.com It is a great honor and privilege to serve as your next SAMPE president. I am particularly excited about this opportunity as we enter an era of rapid change, not just for SAMPE, but for the materials and processing community as well. Over the last few years we have seen significant and rapid change in the global manufacturing base, technology innovations, and materials and processes developments, and all indications are that in the next few years ahead we will experience an ever increasing rate and depth of changes in our industry and everyday lives. Some of these changes will have a major impact on the future of SAMPE, our industry, and our individual careers. The move toward more digital modes of communication and social networking have already had a profound impact on how we think about the role that SAMPE can play in the international materials and processing community. A few years ago, during Allan Crasto’s term as SAMPE president, he asked me to assess how SAMPE might form virtual chapters to better serve our members. At that time we formed a small ad hoc committee and surveyed many of our members with the intent of piloting a virtual chapter to better serve members who do not have the luxury of living near a robust SAMPE chapter or club. What we quickly learned, however, was that there was much greater interest in finding ways to make our existing SAMPE products virtual, than there was in creating a new structure for members to interact virtually. We still have a long way to go in this regard, but now many of you are reading your SAMPE Journal on your electronic device, something that was not even imagined just a few years ago. We also have a SAMPE smart phone app that can be used for planning your experience at our major North American conferences and SAMPE has a growing presence on LinkedIn, Twitter, and other social networking tools. In addition, the SAMPE team is working behind the scenes to redesign our website to make your virtual SAMPE experience more valuable and enjoyable. I am excited to consider what the next innovation will be to increase our ability to communicate and provide services to our members. The world is becoming more connected and this trend will have a profound impact on how the materials and processing community functions going forward. SAMPE has been preparing for these changes over the last few years through such initiatives as the development of strategic partnerships in emerging markets in Asia, the Materials Forecast Forum, and our support of the Materials Genome Initiative. Through these efforts we have begun to plant the SAMPE flag in new industry markets and have explored ways to accelerate the delivery of emerging technologies to those market places. Toward those goals, we have also been investigating how we can best structure SAMPE to serve the needs of the advanced materials and processing community around the globe and into the future. This is indeed an exciting time and I am truly honored to be able to serve you and SAMPE as we collectively shape how SAMPE can meet our member needs going forward.
