Charleston, SC • October 22-25, 2012 One thousand four hundred fifty-six delegates, the largest ever SAMPE Tech event, gathered at the Charleston Convention Center in Charleston, SC to hear two keynote addresses, 167 technical papers, four panels, and three featured presentations. The strong technical program was developed by SAMPE's New Jersey chapter. Katie Thorp, president of SAMPE and chief of the Soft Matter Materials Branch at AFRL/RXAS, summed up the week’s events: “SAMPE condenses a wealth of education, peer networking, and industry activity into a four-day event that is immensely valuable to M&P professionals. This level of engagement is unparalleled and unique to SAMPE. We’re extremely pleased with the energy and buzz surrounding this event because the conference program delivers a wealth of new information and attendees have ample opportunities to make valuable professional connections.” The largest fall exhibit hall featuring 160 companies, 30 of which were new to SAMPE, accompanied the conference. SAMPE was also co-located with Gardner Publications who produced the CompositesWorld 2012: Materials, Markets, and Manufacturing Conference, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, which produced the Manufacturing with Composites Conference. Director of Mid/Aft Body Assembly & Integration William J. (Willy) Geary with Boeing South Carolina opened the conference with a keynote presentation on “Composites: Revolutionizing Flight on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Beyond”. His address covered various lessons learned regarding the extensive use of composites in airplane manufacturing and Boeing's thoughts on what role composites might play in future product development. Bill Fitzgerald, vice president and general manager of commercial engines operation with GE Aviation addressed delegates on Wednesday. His keynote address on “Composite Materials … Enabling Breakthrough Performance in GE/CFM’s Next Generation Engines” focused on GE’s commitment to composite technology, its use in current and next generation engines, and the need for innovation in the future. In addition to the conference sessions and exhibit hall activity, other key meetings were also being conducted in Charleston. The Thermoplastics Working Group met at SAMPE for the second time this year, defining long-term and near-term goals for advancing thermoplastic composites technologies. The Composites Consortium (Benchmarking Composites) met as a panel to discuss the 2012 efforts which included visits to various international composites institutions in Europe during the year. Another well-attended event was the panel on the Global Supply of Carbon Fiber which drew a packed room of interested attendees who were presented with the latest market and supply aspects within the global carbon fiber composites industry. “SAMPE has always been committed to producing quality educational experiences. We are pleased with our Charleston conference attendees’ scores. That is what they expect from a SAMPE conference. Likewise, our exhibitors were equally pleased with the volume and the number of delegates visiting their booths,” said Gregg Balko, SAMPE's executive director.
