The other takeaway from my days in theatre was the value of mentoring. Had I not been taken under the wing
of a more experienced actor I would not have developed into the performer I became. In the last two decades
I have seized upon the opportunity to mentor others inside and outside of SAMPE. One of my greatest delights
has been the opportunity to "judge" student competitions in Europe, Asia and the United States. Spending time
with these students affords me the chance to get to know and mentor some of the "brightest and best" among
SAMPE's future members. I am also involved in the FIRST robotics competition, which builds passion for STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) subjects through the creative effort of designing a robot to play
a new game each year. When you have a need for the formal knowledge, learning that knowledge comes much
more easily and is retained much better.
Given the confluence of all of these thoughts, I was recently surprised to discover that I was resisting a significant
change. I have been a supporter of STEM education since the acronym was first became popular. Then one day
I began to hear a variation on that acronym. I didn't like it. The acronym had morphed into STEAM - Science,
Technology, Engineering, ARTS and Math. At first I was resistant because I perceived that the arts had already
been promoted heavily in this country, often to the detriment of classic STEM subjects. I felt that we needed to
heavily emphasize those subjects without "watering them down" with a further emphasis on the arts.
Slowly I began to realize that the Arts really did belong in the midst of STEM. The solution is not that the
Arts should be introduced in opposition to STEM subjects. Nor should they be introduced as an afterthought.
Instead, they should be an integral part of STEM training. Having the "A" buried in the middle of STEM ultimately
makes a whole lot of sense.
So let me encourage each of you to take on the job of mentoring those who will step into the legacy you will one
day leave behind. Encourage the exploration of your own creativity and look for ways to cultivate that same
sense of creativity in others. We will all be better off if we move STEM forward at full STEAM ahead.
PS - For those of you who are wondering, I am no longer bothered by being "the odd boy".
