Tensile Response Results
The Young's modulus data were collected on strips
with 7.5 cm x 0.3 cm cross section. Three coupons were
tested for each material and cure number. An example
of tensile stress-strain plot (KE1310ST, sample 1, no
cures) is displayed in Figure 8. The results are tabulated
in Table 6, and plotted in Figure 9. In service the ET
materials are typically not pulled but compressed and
sheared, therefore the Young's modulus was measured
as a possible indicator of the materials' change upon
thermal cycling, not as a property representing material
behavior in use.
Again, as for hardness, KE 1310ST and M4641
featured an increase in Young's modulus, while TC 40
and V-340 exhibited a decrease in it. However, the raise
for KE 1310ST and drop for V-340 were very small,
hence Kruskal-Wallis test for the medians in Minitab® 16
statistical software was used to calculate whether these
differences were statistically significant, and found out
that they were not, namely, that basically for KE 1310ST
and V-340 the medians of the populations of values
at zero, three and six cures are statistically the same.
However, the fact that each data set comprises three
values makes the statistical conclusion - whatever it is not well-founded.
On the other hand, although modest, the increase
in Young's modulus for KE 1310ST was consistent in
sign with 50% increase of 50% modulus (stress at 50%
strain) after 24 hr at 180°C of KE 1300 (precursor of
KE1310ST), and 26% raise in 50% modulus measured

on a separate lot of KE1310ST undergone the same cure
cycle for six times in a separate study. Additionally, in
order to understand to what degree the Young's modulus
data were representative of the real materials' behavior,
hardness and Young's modulus of each material were
plotted together (Figure 15), since it was expected that
higher hardness was associated with higher Young's
modulus, as stated in ASTM D1415 Standard Test
Method for Rubber Property - International Hardness15.
Figure 10 illustrates that the in all tested RTVs the
common trend between hardness-Young's modulus held
true: in fact, in KE1310ST and M4641 both properties
increased whereas for TC 40 and V-340 both decreased.
Detecting the expected trend provided some support
that the Young's modulus values, even the smallest
ones, reflected the actual material behavior during
thermal cycling.
