TEST METHOD
In order to validate performance of the newly developed, carbon-capable, DC and DEA sensors;
HP-RTM trials were performed using a Pinette
Emidecau Industries (PEI) press (Figure 4) and
Krauss Maffei (RimStar Compact) high-pressure
injection equipment at the National Composites
Centre (NCC).
All trials were performed using Araldite LY 3585
epoxy resin, with Aradur 3475 hardener (Huntsman
international LLC) and EWOmould 3733 internal
release agent (KVS Eckert & Woelk GmbH). The
mix ratio was set to 100:21 and 2% internal release
agent used.
Preforms were manufactured from a 600 gsm
50k carbon non-crimp fabric (HPT610 C090, SGL
Kümpers GmbH), with 14 gsm LT3366 binder
(Huntsman international LLC). All plies were cut
using a computer numerically controlled (CNC)
ply cutter. Preforms were assembled as a balanced
stack of four plies oriented at 0/90°, with the binder
activated by placing preforms in an oven for 5 minutes at 180°C under 800 mbar vacuum.
All trials were carried out on the HP-RTM development tooling shown in Figure 5. The tool has
a nominal cavity thickness of 2.5 mm and manufactured panels have approximate dimensions of
644 x 288 mm. A carbon-capable DC sensor (Sn.1)
and two carbon-capable DEA sensors (Sn2. and
Sn3) were located in the upper mould, as shown in
Figure 5.
HP-RTM trials were carried out based on the
test matrix given in Table 1. Once the closed tool
reached the required temperature set point (± 2°C),
the tool was opened and preform loaded. The automatic press cycle was then started. During this
cycle, the press closes to a gap of 0.5 mm, a hydraulic vacuum valve opens and vacuum (1000 mbar)
is drawn for 50 seconds. The press then closes to
an injection gap of 0.3 mm and 207 grams of resin
