The area of "automation" in coupling
"additive and subtractive" technologies
becomes much more important as the
industries associated with composite
structures moves forward. As a result,
SAMPE is organizing the first "Automated Placement Manufacturing of
Advanced Composites Structures" symposium in June in the Salt Lake City, UT
area. Why Utah? The site selection was
obvious because of past history in the
development decades ago with large
filament winding technologies (think
Minuteman, Polaris, Poseidon, Trident
I and II, Filament Wound Case Shuttle
boosters, Pershing and numerous other
solid rocket motor cases). Technologies
such as filament winding, pull-winding,
automated tape laying (ATL), resin infusion (many methods), and automated
fiber placement (AFP) either started in
the Utah area or were advanced significantly trying new materials (carbon and
aramid fibers). Known as the "Advanced
Manufacturing Hub" with 33,500 aerospace engineers & material scientists,
14,300 workers in advanced materials,
125,000 people employed in manufacturing, and 3,600 high tech & traditional
manufacturing companies, the selection was obvious. With over 100 materials and manufacturing companies in
Salt Lake area, the 2-day June symposium will cover not only aerospace, energy & automotive markets that require,
& use, automated processes but also
a variety of subtractive and additive
methods. Presenters involved with filament winding, ATL, AFP (also known
as automated tow placement/ATP), HPRTM (and other infusion methods for
automotive) - are being aligned to present & exhibit their technologies.
SAMPE's goal is to bring our members and our global industry the most
current technologies in "additive, subtractive and automation" manufacturing so innovation can advance rapidly
on all fronts. And, if all else fails that you
