Tooling: Critical Materials and Engineering
Technologies for All Markets (Part 1)

W
hen we look deeper into composite structural applications across all market segments,
we find many different shapes, sizes, technology levels, and end uses. While we can see three
" broad " markets from " aerospace-to-consumer " ,
we quickly note that " tooling " spans each and every
entity. The reason - because it requires " tooling " to
shape, form, and finally cure the structure into its
final application part. The purpose of this Tech Tidbits is to provide the reader with some sense of the
breadth of tooling materials, applications and critical properties the designer and manufacturer must
certainly consider.
A previous SAMPE Journal issue (Nov-Dec
2006)1 provided a table of numerous tooling options listing metals, ceramics. plaster, composites,
graphite, foam and water soluble materials available at that time. Many are still available and the
reader should review that article. No formal examples with discussion on property criticality or example photos were provided at that time. However, this Tech Tidbits will expand upon that earlier
discussion, starting with a broad summary table of
key materials often used - with photo examples following. The table summarizes the primary tooling
families one often sees within the composites industry today. The two primary " composite " tooling
families are GFRP (glass fiber reinforced plastic)
and CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic). Obviously, combinations are possible but we shall defer
discussion on those.
