and/or graphene technology materials that can
strongly influence overall mechanical, physical
and/or thermal characteristics. Such materials in
combination with others open up new areas of
technology - such as " multi-functional materials " . But
that is a topic for another day.
Okay - back to additive manufacturing technology.
Well, in the last few years, SAMPE has held several
workshops to highlight additive manufacturing (or
AM as we will refer to it from here on). We held AM
workshops at the University of Dayton Research
Laboratory, then at the National Institute for Aviation
Research (NIAR), and then at the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory (ORNL). Each event strongly indicated
the growth in understanding AM, applying AM, and
advancing/developing AM across numerous market
segments. At first AM manufacturing interests
centered around developing the processing
equipment and then understanding the various
materials. Often, much interest was centered around
polymer AM structures which rapidly moved toward
structural fiber AM as well as metal AM interests.
The fact that one could " add materials " and build
structures from essentially the " inside-to-outside "
was novel, intriguing, and rewarding. AM offered
what cannot be done by machining, cutting, drilling,
and removing material in building something with a
geometric interior. In other words - AM truly meant
" adding material during the building stage, as
opposed to subtracting or removing material.
SAMPE has found that AM technology papers,
panels, and sessions at our conferences continue to
provide high-quality and novel technology papers on
AM across a very broad range of materials. Initially,
polymeric material, then metals, then fiber-reinforced
materials began to enter the marketplace as well as
in serious structural applications. Is AM here to stay?
Yes, our previous technical committee was seeing
heavy traffic to the AM papers, panels, and displays.
Bottom line, AM has resolved several key issues and
has significant insertion into market segments that
rely on AM's continued support. In other words - look
for more to come. We are not at the " end of the trail. "

Dr. Beckwith, SAMPE Global Technical Director,
SAMPE Journal Technical Editor and Journal
of Advanced Materials Editor. With over 50
years'
experience in composite materials,
structures, design/manufacturing - starting
with pioneering work with 1st UK carbon
fibers in 1967. Most notable, his work resolving
propellant grain cracking problem (1st Stage
Minuteman) working with Thiokol colleagues
and Dr. Edward Teller in late 1960's. He held 4
US Presidential Appointments as the carbon fiber industry expert
negotiating Export Control rules (Dept. of Commerce). He is a
SAMPE Fellow, SME Jud Hall Award, SACMA Leadership Award
and SAMPE Distinguished Service Award. He developed " resin
infusion " technology, filament wound COPVs, amusement rides
(NASA Space Camp), underground petrol tanks (Petronas), Arctic
drill systems (solid methane), and pressure vessels for the US Navy/
Air Force/Army and NASA (Filament Wound Case-FWC Program).
He has over 500 publications.
