REVIEW: SAMPE's 2023 Materials Innovation &
Advanced Technology Leadership Forum
SAMPE's 2nd
annual Materials Innovation & Advanced Technology Leadership Forum was again held in
Huntington Beach, CA, with an impressive group of international and domestic attendees representing a
wide range of technologists from manufacturing companies and material suppliers, research laboratories,
and educational facilities, plus various government agencies overseeing critical technology research and
programs.
A half-day tour of the Axiom Materials plant in nearby Santa Ana provided 30 attendees the chance to see
various prepreg operations with different processes designed to provide materials that be used to extend
technologies across multiple industries.
Back at the Forum, the attending group was welcomed by Prof. Jeff Baur (Univ. Illinois at UrbanaChampaign)
and Scott Stephenson (SAMPE NA President& Acting CEO/Composites World. After a lead-off
presentation by the Keynote speaker, Dr.-Ing Christian Keun, SAMPE Global President, the next day and
a half included seven sessions on the distribution of various growth technologies. Moderators Prof. Baur,
Dr. Kevin Simmons (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory), and Prof. Enrique Garcia (National Composites
Centre UK, NCC) provided an excellent discussion with the speaker in follow-up panels after each session.
The sessions covered: Composites for Sustainability; Composites in Hydrogen World; Automotive
Structural Component Design, Analysis, and Manufacturing; Sustainable Aerospace Visions for 2050; Multifunctional
Composite Material Systems for Vehicle Battery Enclosures; Composites Toward Circularity, and,
Multifunctional Applications.
