What made you first want to volunteer at
SAMPE?
A
s I developed my knowledge in adhesives
and bonding, I saw a lot of opportunities to
collaborate in different ways and really make an
impact across multiple spaces. I started participating
at the local chapter level, serving as an officer in
our local chapter, and then as a session chair at the
national meetings working to create interesting
sessions with lots of great research and robust
technical debate. Working with great collaborators,
including Jim Mazza, Kara Storage from AFRL, and
John Connell from NASA, as well as many others(!),
enabled us to create a culture of strong programming
over the years. I have also had the opportunity to
be on the planning committee for a couple of the
national meetings, which is a grand challenge -sometimes
terrifying but extremely satisfying.
Share your favorite SAMPE story or memory:
E
arly in our sol-gel development years, our TriServices
government/industry team working on
maturing sol-gel surface treatment developments
would meet at SAMPE meetings, where we would
both share the output of our R&D work as well as get
to know each other better. I loved getting together
with that team and not only attending the meetings
but also goofing around with that team at all the
networking events or touring the area. It changed
the dynamic of how we interacted and made me
look forward to the events. I cannot fail to mention
how proud I was to become a SAMPE Fellow at
Future Materials Trends Panel at the October 2019 Seattle Chapter
SAMPE meeting.
my induction ceremony in Dallas, TX. It was truly
heartwarming to hear all of the words of support from
my colleagues and be honored at that event.
What takeaways have you learned from your
volunteer experiences?
ur industry is very big but at the same time, pretty
small. Careers evolve, and people move in and
out of the companies and organizations where they
work and into other jobs and functions. However, it is
important to note that you will see these people again
and again in their new roles. The simple life lesson of
treating people well is so important, as many of the
people you see at the beginning of your career will
be with you 30 years later. Also, I am super excited to
work with my daughter Denise, who I am so proud to
say is also a Materials Science Engineer, and I love to
see her grow in her technical career and get to know
SAMPE. We sometimes get to work together, and we
even innovate together and have a joint patent issued
to us. It is truly a great journey to be on!
