LOCATED
IN
NORTHERN
Goleta, the historic Rancho La Patera
and Stow House is central to the rich
and ethnically diverse history of the
Goleta Valley. This landmark offers
a unique opportunity for visitors and
locals alike to experience what life
in the Goleta Valley was like during
the early twentieth century, as well
as the opportunity to learn about
the deep history that has defined
Goleta. The Goleta Valley Historical
Society works to collect, preserve,
interpret and foster appreciation
for Goleta Valley's history through
exhibits,
programs
and
preservation of the land
and buildings.
William Whitney Stow
purchased La Patera
in 1871 but it was not
until 1872 when his son,
Sherman Stow, began
developing the Ranch
along with Sherman's
wife, Ida Hollister Stow.
Construction on the
Stow House began
in 1872. In 1967, the Goleta Valley
Historical Society assumed stewardship
of Stow House and this treasured
landmark has been a focal
point of the Goleta community. La
Patera is still family owned from
descendants of Sherman and Ida
(currently going on seven (7) generations)
and currently grows lemons
and avocados.
The Goleta Valley Historical Society
offers walking tours of the property
that include the ranch yard; home
to baby goats, chickens and other
critters. Their docent-led house tours
of Stow House, allow visitors to learn
about the rich history of the Stow
family and their beautiful Rancho
La Patera, all while enjoying a tractor
ride or just a family picnic on
the grounds. The educational programs
for children include Ranch
Days and Camp Stow, while their
Education Center hosts a variety of
exhibits and guest speakers, all telling
the story of the Goleta Valley
from Chumash and native peoples
up to present day.
They have a rich tradition of overseeing
many annual local festivals.
Among these are Fiesta Ranchera,
Old Time Fiddler's Festival, Old
Fashioned 4th of July, Music at the
Ranch, Sundays at the Ranch and
Holiday at the Ranch. This year they
are delighted to collaborate with
their beneficent partners, The City of
Goleta and the Stow family, in order
to host the City of Goleta's 20th
Anniversary Community Celebration
and a Community Celebration of the
150th year Anniversary of the Stow
House and La Patera.
In 2014, Goleta Valley Historical
Society finished the complete restoration
of the gardens, trees, and
pathways surrounding the Stow
House. This project has allowed
Rancho La Patera to maintain the
ambiance of a late 19th century
specimen garden featuring a variety
of trees, many of which are exotic.
The beautiful gardens of Rancho
La Patera also make an ideal location
for events such as weddings,
fundraisers, concerts, and more.
